Nope. Football is a (sometimes) pleasant distraction. Ain't worked up about nothing.

Hard to believe that Bama is #5 nationally with that number:

1. Oklahoma.......101
2. Notre Dame.....98
3. Ohio State.......95
4. USC.................91
5. Alabama..........73

So you're telling me...we weren't worth a shite until the 90s and have still been ranked #1 almost 3x as much as Georgia.

More impressive is Florida, Florida State, and Miami all being in the top ten in appearances but not debuting until at least 1983.

You must be in your 20's or a teenager. The reason why it is that way is that state was the prime state for over two decades and Nebraska played all three of those schools during the 80's and 90's and early 2000s for national titles.

UF was first ranked #1 in 1985.

ETA...November 9th will be the 30th anniversary of Florida's first time ever being ranked #1.

Would be interesting to see if adding Tulane and Georgia Tech in their SIAA, SoCon, and SEC years to the list would change positions.

You must be young....where Florida is today is where they typically are. I'm guessing SOS and CUM account for 40 of those weeks. They are gone. And they ain't coming back.

So basically 40 weeks and 3 national titles > 1980.

Which is strange because we were banned from winning the SEC and playing in a bowl that season.

Actually Nov. 9th, 1985 is the 30th anniversary of UGA beating #1 UF 24-3 to knock them outta 1st place...

quote:

11/9/1985 ''No. 1 for a Week'' Florida 3 vs. Georgia 24

From 1983-85 Florida was having its best run ever. In 1983 they had gone 9-2-1, in 1984 won their first SEC title, albeit then stripped, while going 9-1-1, and had opened the 1985 season 7-0-1. After winning at Auburn 14-10 in a battle of top-10 teams (UF No. 2, AU No. 6), Florida moved to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in school history. The ranking lasted one week.

A Georgia team that would go 7-3-2 on the season ran wild on the Florida defense in a 24-3 victory. Dawg freshmen RBs Keith Henderson (145 yards, 76 yard TD run, two total TDs) and Tim Worley (104 yards, 89 yard TD run) keyed UGA’s 344 total rushing yards. UGA stifled the Gator rushing attack and sacked Kerwin Bell numerous times allowing them to survive his 408 yards passing. The loss broke Galen Hall’s 15-0-1 record at Florida.
Florida would go on to have the best record in the SEC again as they finished 9-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, but would be ineligible for the SEC crown due to still being on probation. Unsure of crooked 1980s NCAA politics, I have no idea whether they were eligible for the national title, but they had been voted No. 1 that week so I assume they were eligible, meaning the Dawgs cost them a title shot.

How did it cost us a title shot if we were banned from a bowl?

Doesn't look like it's affiliated with UF at all actually.

Florida never earned its first No. 1 ranking in the AP poll until 1985

And they held it exactly one week, as they got throttled by 3 touchdowns by 17th ranked Georgia.

Alabama & Mississippi State (2014): The Crimson Tide didn’t take its usual place atop the AP poll until late last season, closing the year as the No. 1-ranked team and the No. 1 seed in the inaugural College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs earned their first No. 1 ranking in school history last season upon topping three straight opponents ranked in the top 10 in the national polls. Mississippi State maintained its No. 1 ranking for five weeks before dropping its first game of the year to, you guessed it, Alabama, which would take over as No. 1 after the win.

Being forced to vacate it is tantamount to being banned from winning it.
