I'm rooting for ASU. This philosophy doesn't apply to the SEC. Everyone respects is enough to just take care of your business. No need for style points.

Tis true. The reputation of the conference gives us all the benefit of the doubt when decisions like rankings, bowl games, and even playoff spots are decided. And remember, playoff spots aren't determined by a computer algorithm that rates teams in an unbiased manner but by humans who are very much effected by such things as reputation and national opinion.
"Who's in?" is very much influenced by opinion and it benefits us all to keep public opinion on our side. If we don't then it could be any one of us that winds up getting snubbed on anything from better bowl games to playoff spots and/or seeding.
