Off the top of my head, if we had the playoffs in the past it could have happened in 2008, 2009, and 2013

Damn you're right. I couldn't tell you who the 3rd best team was that year but it sure as hell wasnt Notre Dame

2012 Final BCS Poll:
1. Notre Dame
2. Alabama
3. Florida
4. Oregon
5. Kansas State
Under the current playoff system, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oregon would definitely be in.
It would be a tough toss-up between Florida and Kansas State.

Right that was the last year with Clowney and the Manziel year where A&M got ridiculously hot in the final games

Or if the referee didn't allow an illegal play by Notre Dame to tie the Pittsburgh game in the 2nd overtime.
Notre Dame made a 40 yard field goal, but had two players with the same number on the field at the same time which, by the rulebook, is a 15-yard penalty for illegal participation.

Can you imagine if Florida plays in a natty in 2012? Muschamp would no doubt still be the coach here, even though that was 100% Dan Quinn carrying the team that year.

Can't agree here. As good as Bama was in '08, I still think USC and Texas were better that year. We were cheated out of seeing one of the GOAT national championship games when USC lost to Oregon State, costing them a chance to play Florida.
