We are already seeing problems with the playoff in its current format

They should expand it to 8 teams and take all 5 conference champs (if the conference champs have no more than two losses) then the next best teams after that. I think this would go a long way to please people and end the debate about conference preference.

It's not really any difference than the BCS except that they made it 4 teams instead of two. It's essentially the BCS with a +1 game.

I never saw the benefit of switching from the BCS from a fans standpoint.

What if this happens

SEC Champ 12-1
SEC Runner Up 11-1
Big 10 champ 12-1
Big 12 Champ 11-1
Pac 12 Champ 12-1
ACC Champ 13-0

Example:

Georgia 12-1 Wins SEC
Ole Miss 12-1 Loses SEC Title Game to Georgia
Michigan State 12-1
TCU or Kansas State 12-1
Oregon 12-1
Florida State 13-0

The committee is very different than the BCS method of choosing. If it was BCS formula the SEC would have a very good chance of getting two in.

If that happens, it will be UGA, FSU, and Oregon in for sure. Mich St or Ole Miss would be complaining. Ole Miss should be the ones in considering they would have run the table in the West BUT they would probably pick Mich St to go since UGA and Ole Miss had just played and you could argue that the SEC championship game was the play-in game. Plus, they would quiet down the Big Ten media.

I honestly think the SEC runner up in that scenario would be fricked. Hard to ignore a major conference champion with the same or better record being left out.

The big 12 champion might also get left out because of lack of a championship game.

I like the idea of some kind of restraint on Conference Champions being automatic qualifiers. Whether it is a loss limit or some kind of rankings limit (must be inside top 10).

I think 8 is more or less the best we can do. It is unrealistic to see the same kind of percentage of teams interring a tournaments as we see in baseball or Basketball.

Now if we could just make the trophy mot look like a flashlight that would be cool.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say but you did better at explaining it. I agree. This will also wake up the Big 12 and they would add 2 teams next year.

I've said from day 1 of this playoff that the committee is going to be a massive dumpster fire and that we should've kept the BCS and taken the top 4 teams.

My personal thought is that only allowing conference champs into the playoffs is the best way to remove gray areas. I like the idea of a 5 team playoff, with all 5 power conference champions getting in. teams 4 and 5 having a play-in while teams 1, 2 & 3 get a bye. you determine the seeding by w/l, strength of conference, strength of schedule, etc.

Playoffs suck.
Expanding them would suck even more.

I wish they never would have done this shite.

Not no, but hell no.

Why would you want to exclude the SEC champions if it's a particularly brutal year and the champs come out with a 9-3 record?

And as far as the polls go, I thought the whole idea of a playoff was to get away from the polls.

The playoffs should just have conference champions, you don't win your conference, you don't go. And that way you would completely eliminate the polls except for seeding.

Otherwise, if you're going to use polls and allow wildcards, why not just vote for who the best team is and go back to the way it was?

I say go to 16 teams (works for FCS).

All 10 conference champs get an automatic bid regardless of record. Everyone from SEC to Sun Belt.

The remaining 6 are by selection but must have at least 8 wins for eligibility.

Anyone that advocates expanding the playoffs hates college football. It is the only sport where the regular season means something.

They should have kept the BCS rankings and just taken the top 4 ranked teams for the playoff. Everyone knew the SEC would almost always get two teams in though so that wasn't going to happen.
