WDE24's Top 5 SEC Running Backs - Week 4

As always this list chronicles the top SEC running backs by production on the field to date for the current season. Objective statistics are the primary criteria utilized in formulating this list, however, the statistics are set into context based on the quality of opponent upon which the statistics were accumulated. In some instances where the choice is close, a subjective eye test is also taken into account. However, hype, injuries, suspensions, etc. are not. This isn't a list of most talented or a prediction of NFL draft status. It is just an unbiased look at which 5 SEC RB's are getting the job done the best on the field. As such, this list will likely drastically change each week, especially early in the season.
Note: This list only looks at performance at the RB position. Thus, kick and punt return yardage aren't part of the evaluation. However, receiving out of the RB position is accounted for.
1. Leonard "one man team" Fournette- Fournette is averaging 215.7 yards per game from scrimmage and opened up a little bit of a gap between him and Chubb. LF is the clear front runner as best player in cfb. The only question is if he remains healthy and doesn't allow the nfl talk to distract him.
2. Nick Chubb - Nick averages just as many yards per touch as LF,but doesn't get as many yards per game and has played inferior competition. However, Chubb has a golden opportunity to make a statement and close the gap this week.
3. Derrick Henry - Henry barely edges out Alex Collins for the 3rd spot. If Henry doesn't have a big game this week, he is likely to drop 1 or 2 places.
4. Alex Collins - AC appears to have put the Toledo struggles behind him and has had 2 very good games to continue his climb up these rankings. A good game on Rocky Top will likely propel him up another spot next week
5. Peyton Barber - In a battle of work horse backs, Barber barely edges out Jalen Hurd by having small advantages in running yards, receiving yards, total yards, yards per play and yards per game.

Jalen Hurd, Tre Carson, Sony Michel, Boom Williams, Kenyan Drake

Chubb will be playing in the slop this weekend. Curious to see who benefits-Bama D or UGA running game?

I'd switch Collins and Henry (Henry's gotten worse every week), and then I'd honestly keep Boom as the 5th running back. Not sure what's going on with him personally, but I can't fault him for only getting 7 carries last game which kills his numbers. Sony's really freaking good, and I think that if he were starting for another team he'd be 3rd. We're really fortunate to have such a great 2nd string back.
Once again though, great research and I can't fault you for any of your picks. Barber looked much better last week and has to give y'all a little bit of optimism.

I'd expect him to get more carries but YPC to go down, just taking the weather into account.

The reason I love Sony Michel. Not only is he good out of the backfield but he runs routes like a reciever.

LF got to play Auburn's run defense which appeared largely uninterested in attempting to tackle him. I would call that inferior competition.

Dawson said from the get go that he'll rotate the RBs and ride whichever one is playing well. Boom had fumbled and missed a block. It was just Kemp's night.

The committee looks at all of the games played, not just the weakest opponent.

Just kind of depends on what you value. Williams' average is higher than both Hurd and Barber. I'd personally put Hurd over Barber because of touchdown numbers, but touchdowns are also a really tough stat to measure because so much of it is based on when you get your carries.
I think 5-10 is really close right now though with Hurd, Barber, Kamara, Walton, Williams, and Michel. Can argue for any guy to be 5th probably outside of maybe Kamara.

In terms of one man teams, I think Leonard Fournette edges out Cam Newton as best the SEC ever saw.
