Can they possibly point the finger at anyone else?
Geez, it's obvious they paid Newton (or his family) to attend Auburn. Whether that's proven or not is another story.

They have to blame someone else to help them sleep at night. Oh well, if it makes them feel better.

I'm sure a lot of people in the United States think this. SEC to them = most corrupt.

What exactly is stupid about it?
From an outsider watching this play out in the media, I have made up my mind ... the kid (or his family) got paid. This may not be proven, and nothing may come of it for Auburn, but IN MY OPINION they likely got paid.
Again, what's so stupid about that? I think it's a pretty reasonable position. I'm not on the jury for this case, I'm just a random person watchign this play out in the media who has an opinion of what appears to have happenned. Are people no longer allowed to make their own judgments based on information at hand?

A recent UF RB commit (don't remember his name), who was a strong lean to AU, committed to UF b/c Meyer told him that Auburn was going on probation for paying Cam.
That's the reek I got from an Aubie booster......
