Was the targeting call against RSJ (TAMU) the correct call?

Most Aggies I know say that this was NOT the correct call.

What does The Rant think? IMO it was a bad call, but I do not know the intricacies of the rule.

Is he suspended got the Alabama game or just the rest of the game he played in? I never heard much about that.

Said it once, and I'll say it again...as a State fan, too.

It was the wrong call.

I say it was a bad call, and if they continue to call it that way I feel sorry for all the knees that are going to get blown out.

I don't see a whole lot of difference between RSJ'S block and Ragland's hit jmo

By the letter of the rule, it was the right call. Said it from the stands after the replay. Helmets briefly touched before huge body contact

My issue is the rule. Needs amending to judge for intent or receivers can lower helmet to draw the flag. Not saying that happened, just that there was no intent and the helmet contact was minor compared to the shoulder/body contact.

It doesn't matter. The rule is garbage and affects the game in a way that is overly punitive to the players.

That's not targeting. That's called blocking. AKA...getting your tits lit up.

It was borderline but I would have let it go.

I'm of the opinion targeting should only be called when it is very clear cut, otherwise you just water down the game too much.

Take the malicious, dirty hits out, anything that's just a regular football play is fine and that was way more like a regular football play.

I'd say at least half of the targeting calls they make are bullshite, even those that don't get overturned.

I do not think he is suspended for the next game because the ejection happened in the first half.

I think targeting should really be reserved for receivers coming across the middle of the field and quarterbacks when they are standing in the pocket.

I'm probably a bit biased, but I thought it was a terrible call. RSJ is 6'5" and that defensive player was 6' (guessing). Tough for someone that tall trying to make a block on a smaller guy...and if he tried to get lower he runs the risk of hurting himself. The rule is just plain bad...the helmet making contact with the other helmet is bullshite. It's one thing to lead with your helmet and make contact directly on someone's helmet, but when you lead with your shoulder (as you are supposed to do) there is a good chance that you are going to make some contact with his helmet. The intent of the rule was to stop the headhunters out there. Leave it to a "government like" organization like the NCAA is and this is what happens. This was a very bad call!

wasn't surprised to see the flag as the refs throw it if in doubt.

I thought for sure it was going to be overturned.

It was a first half hit so he's good to go for the Bama game.

This is correct.

It's a tough call, thought is should have been overturned at review but they obviously saw it differently.

I understand the need for the rule, but the penalty for the unintended contact is very harsh.

What I don't like is now he will check up on a block like that in the future and it could cost us a 1st down or maybe a big play because of that one bs call.

That is the rule now. We lost Deion Jones, OLB, on a hit to Jeremy Johnson similarly. JJ ducked into the hit and DJ hit him with his shoulder meaning to give him a lick but was not intentionally aiming for head.

As for the knees they have a rule for that too. You cannot hit a defenseless player intentionally with a cut block. We had a OG do that against MSU on a peel back block and got flagged for 15 yds - did not get ejected though, just personal foul penalty. It was the right call BTW. I give credit to Miles for pulling the guy aside immediately and coaching him up on that and reminding him that was illegal.

As for the other strange rules we have had PF penalties twice this season already for players continuing play after their helmets were ripped off.
