Was the 4th & 1 Auburn punt really a mistake?

I've seen a lot of AU fan posts focus on the decision to punt on 4th &1 from midfield as a big reason they lost.

Personally, I would have gone for it because I think teams should go for it more often than they do. I do, however, see the reasoning behind punting.

The Auburn defense had held LSU to three punts in the second half - their only score was a punt return.

LSU had the momentum after that return - giving them the ball at midfield could have been disastrous.

Bottling LSU up at the goal line could have been huge at that point in the game. Unfortunately for Auburn, it was a short punt, and LSU came out with decent field position.

LSU didn't score on the drive, and Auburn got the ball back with the lead intact. This time, though, they were bottle up on their own goaline.

The Auburn offense struggled the entire second half, and while I personally would have gone for it, I don't think it was unreasonable to punt and let the defense continue to play in that situation. I'm interested to see what other fanbases think.

No. The reason they lost is they were outplayed from the 2nd quarter on.

I think they should have gone for it and tried to get their momentum back. But nothing was working for them in the 2nd half. They only had 65 yards of total offense in the second half, so chances are they were scared they weren't going to make it, which was the wrong thing to be in that situation.

Never thought I'd say this, but CEO definitely out-coached Gus from the second quarter on in that game.

Just imagine if LSU had a serviceable QB -- one who didn't kill drives with bad decision-making: that 27-3 ending margin could have been 30+.

The difference in the outcomes of those two back to back punts was huge.
