Alabama claimed it, along with Minnesota. Bama had a worse conference record than State, and State won the SEC. State beat Bama head to head and finished with a higher ranking.

Bama, State your rights to this claim? I have a hunch that State was not voted champions because those poindexter voters did not want to travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to watch the Bulldogs play

I'm not sure if State can claim it, but the fact that a team that finished 3rd in their conference, and 20th in the AP can claim a Natty is phenomenal.

I've read in a couple of places that State didn't participate in the post-season because of the war effort in Mississippi (they didn't even field a team in '43). I believe they shutdown most airports and train stations right after the Pearl Harbor attack and were not able to travel out of state.

quote:

For the 1941 SEC champions, the season would not end until the following week, when they traveled to the West Coast and defeated the University of San Francisco 26-13 at Kezar Stadium to complete an 8-1-1 campaign. The next day, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America was at war. Many players from the 1938-1942 Mississippi State teams fought in World War II. One player, Harvey “Boots” Johnson, a star on the 1940 team, was killed in a bombing raid over Japan. Buddy Elrod, State’s first All-American, was imprisoned in a German Stalag prison camp. Football was played in 1942, but Mississippi State did not field a team in 1943 due to the war.

Sorry, my rule is to only discuss Alabama's last 11 national championships. Anything beyond that just isn't recent/relevant enough. Last year's championship means 1941 rolls off the list. Any questions about 1961 are fair game until next year though.

On what grounds is Alabama trying to claim it then? That's a joke.

No, Minnesota was the undefeated national champs for 1941.

Mississippi State had a 0-0 tie with LSU and lost to Duquesne Dukes 16-0. Mississippi State is the SEC champs for 1941.

frick it. State can have it. I'm satisfied with the 11 AP, Coaches poll, BCS, or playoff titles

If Minnesota was undefeated and the others weren't then why is this even an issue?

That's not how it works. Universities don't CLAIM championships, they simply ACKNOWLEDGE championships that have been AWARDED to them.

In 1941 Alabama Men's Quarterly (or some shite) awarded the Crimson Tide a national championship trophy. It took 40+ years, but Alabama finally overcame the shame and acknowledged it thinking no one would notice.

Again, it's not about CLAIMING championships, it's about ACKNOWLEDGING championships that have been AWARDED to a team.

State is not in the discussion.

Minnesota has the legitimate right to recognize that one.

Princeton was undefeated in 1950 and claims the national championship. OU, UK and the others had at least 1 loss.

Because some publication (Ladies Home Journal, or some shite) back in 1941 gave Alabama an award as the best team in college football.

It doesn't make any sense to ask Alabama why they were GIVEN the award, but you have to ask them why they acknowledge receiving it.

No.

They do not even try and claim it and nobody was trying to give it to them. That is the year they did win their lone SEC Championship though.

Bama was the NC winner either. Minnesota was the true champion that year.

There was a selector at the time listed in the NCAA records book who picked us.

No, they don't get that one... but it was a hell of a year for them. But for the war who knows what they would have accomplished the next year or two?

A great Bulldog team.

Nah it's fine. We don't need to claim anything we didn't earn outright. We aren't Ole miss.
