Did App St play out of their heads or did Butch get out coached? I'm sure it was some combination of the two. I didn't get to watch last night.

If by coaching you mean "preparedness" - then YEAH, he was outcoached.

Appy's Coach, however, complete shite the bed in the 4th qtr. It was seriously like he stole that game from his kids.

In that regard, no

probably both.

They surely got outcoached, AS only lost because they missed a friggin XP and a FG by a freshman in his first game.

As far as outplayed...well UT won so apparently they played the "best", but when you consider the talent gap between the 2 schools, the fact it went ot OT tells me AS outplayed UT.

Whatever outcoaching he may have done was negated by his absolutely horrendous clock management at the end of the game.

Both. It's not terribly surprising though that Butch was outcoached.

Yes, but Appalachian State's coach cost them the game.

It seemed to me like neither coach wanted to win.

App St. coach stopped playing to win in the 4th quarter. He should have called timeout after the second to last play in the game and could have given his team a better shot at kicking a game winning field goal.

Up until the last 2 minutes of regulation, yes. App St played not to lose in those last 2 minutes and blew their opportunity to win it in regulation. Having a TO in their pocket and not even getting a FG attempt is a Pee Wee league mistake on the coach's part.

I agree Butch was out coached. Y'all simply have too much talent for this BS.
Fwiw I wanted CMR gone starting at least 4 years ago. UT deserves a better coach.
That said it is only one game and he did squeak out a win. But, seriously if I was a Vols fan I'd be screaming for his head if he completes the Tri-fecta of last night with a loss to UF and UGA.

I can, to be honest, understand the play calling. He was down his starting center and his kicker was having one of those nights.

Should he have gone for it in regulation? Well in hindsight absolutely.

Hindsight is 20/20. Appalachian State played much better then most of us expected and nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the year.

I predicted they would run out of steam in the second half. I didn't predict that would be what saved the Vols.

He thought he was entitled to win because "muh Nike school". They all did. Pathetic effort from the entire team, coaches, and fans.

I don't think his play calling needed to be aggressive, he just needed to use his timeout at some point to at least attempt a FG.

And I don't blame you. We're working on an antidote for CMRPTSD© on our board.
After clinical trials perhaps we'll offer you a distributorship for folks in your neck of the woods.

The better team got beat for sure so give Butch a little credit for rallying the troops, Jones is a reasonable man so I'm sure he has on the bulletin board this morning Meineke Car Care or bust! He knows now the goal is to simply become bowl eligible and start looking ahead to next season.

Yes. Appy State didn't out-talent Tennessee at any position but they still took them to OT. Tennessee deserved to lose that game and certainly doesn't deserve to be in the top 20, let alone the top 10.
