I've heard from many Great Dane owners that they aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, same with beagles.

Mostly though what we think of as "smart" is associated with more "human" type behavior, and I think hunting and hounddogs do get unfairly judged in that regard, because their specialty is more in reverting to a more basic animal instinct, to hunt.

That said, I've had three collies and they are very good at interacting with humans and learning things. Their siblings the border collies are generally regarded as the smartest of dogs. So, although the trapped in a well thing doesn't actually work, the Lassie mythology did have some basis in fact, as herding dogs they are good at keeping track of their flock and their humans and making sure nothing happens to them.
