Yeah, it is just a bit on-the-nose. I think it's the name of the uniforms more than anything else. It's well intentioned, but I'm not sure it comes off the right way. Maybe a helmet sticker or jersey patch would have been better.

You should probably include a pic of the helmet close up. For those that don't know and it is kinda hard to make out from a distance the Smoky Mountains are shown on the helmet.

I know it's rare for you but other teams do all the time.

Why does that seem kinda fricked up to me?

Because OP didn't explain the helmet? The Smokey Greys feature the Smoky Mtns. on the helmet. Otherwise, since when is drawing attention to a tragedy fricked up? We the only ones not allowed to do that?

This is dumb... Why stop there?... Put some flames on the unis while you're at it.

Yup. Along with moonshine jugs on the sides of their helmets and little banjo helmet stickers.

OP didn't explain but I'm actually surprised this came from you. You know the geography and presumbly know that the Smokys are famous for the rings resembling smoke which are often gray or grayish blue in color. Real question: Have you followed this story at all? I mean REALLY followed it? It's a helluva lot bigger than a simple wildfire and far worse than property damage.

At any rate, THIS IS WHY:

May need to ask someone other than us about this.

Um...yes. I'm aware of the helmet. I was saying that the name of the uniforms is the source of the weird feeling about wearing a smoke-colored uniform when honoring the victims of a wildfire.

The Smokies baseball team better keep their mouths shut then.

This thread is no more than some pile on bullshite dressed up as 'gives me a weird feeling.' Come the frick on. Thankfully not a soul in PF/Gatlinburg is confused about the choice and they know the difference between Smoky and Smokey (not saying they all spell it right but then neither does the board).

Prof, you are way too pissed off at me when I simply said that I understand why it can be misconstrued. If you can't understand how it can be seen as weird, it's because you're too close to the situation. PR is not just about those who do know what is going on at any time. It is also about understanding optics. I don't like it, but it's true.

I'm not really mad at you although I am frustrated by the bullshite in this thread and disagree with your assessment. I responded to you in that last post but I was actually speaking generally about a lot of the dumbass responses in this thread (minus the smartass comment about the Smokies baseball team which was indeed my smartass comment to you -- not really meant to be personal in a mean way though). Outside tRant I would be absolutely shocked if a soul has anything more to say about this than bravo let alone feels weirded out about it.

In fact, if we minus out twitter and your typical football boards I'd be willing to lay out some coin and bet on it.

DoreonthePlains,

To follow up on what I didn't address... A lot of PR is aimed at a target audience only. This is aimed first and foremost at Tennesseans, specifically those of us in East, Tennessee. It's a morale boost and knowing this area, one that will mean more than a lot of people realize. All of East, TN has been effected by this from Ground Zero to areas like Newport, Morristown, Jefferson City, and even Knoxville (on one side of the mountains and within spitting distance of PF/Gatlinburg) to places like Campbell Co., Tazewell/New Tazewell (Claiborne Co), and Middlesboro, KY all located near the Clinch Mtns. and all near to Gatlinburg.(And FWIW I left out a lot of places).

Tons of the folks in this area work in PF/Gatlinburg and some own homes there. Many know people who died. Many more are Volunteers. A good portion are UT alums. They strive to send their children to UT. Almost all are Vol fans.

If you need to understand targeted PR (and I'm not sure this one is limited as it will sound great when the bowl announcers discuss it which is when the VAST majority will hear about it then look no further than politics but there are plenty of other examples. The optics from the bowl game will look fantastic because it comes with a story.

Would Florida wear "gunpowder" unis to support Orlando victims?

I swear UTK can't get anything right.

The name of the uni is the same as the canine mascot. You'd think the most visited National Park in the US wouldn't be so hard for the brilliant minds here to get right. Confusing Smokey and Smoky is just well...
