Came across this article:
“Vanderbilt athletics announced plans to send 10 student-athletes on study abroad trips that will be funded solely by its athletic department.”

Link- LINK

While I have nothing against Vanderbilt (OK they think they are “better" than everyone else and once had the infamous Gee as their President- see Ohio State and bow ties), in any case, how is this not against NCAA rules- giving athletes (and only athletes) money to travel abroad?

I am surely wrong, but can someone simply tell me how this is legal under NCAA rules?
Thanks

Scholarshipped student-athletes getting scholarshipped to do a semester abroad, out of season. I see nothing nefarious here. Pretty sure a couple of my teammates did a semester abroad, no clue if bama covered the tab though.

If Vandy was a stickler for the rules they would never have hired Gee or Franklin.

For one, Vandy is a private school. If these athletes are on scholarship and they want to do a study abroad, I would think it isn't out of line to apply their scholarship towards the study abroad. If there was public money involved it might be different. I see no issue here.

Vanderbilt has allowed student-athletes to study abroad in the past, but finances made this summer's situation a bit different. The Commodores football team returned from last winter's berth in the Camping World Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La, with a near-$100,000 surplus from its bowl budget. As Williams studied the applications for study-abroad programs, he realized the budget to send Vanderbilt's student-athletes abroad -- as well as to include $1,000 travel stipends -- totaled about $100,000.

They used their bowl money surplus to do so. While the rest of our schools are buying bowl rings, gear, etc. they decided to use it in a much more enriching manner.

Sounds like the rest of us are the ones that need to be doing better.

Didn't G. Gee restructure the football program/organization when he was there? May be why
