The Northwestern player union has at least one major-conference private school preparing for the big-picture ramifications.

Vanderbilt athletics has consulted with its lawyers about the dynamics of a union, what it might mean for the school and how to best serve students, AD David Williams told CBSSports.com.

In other words, time to prepare in case more schools are targeted.

“We're in very close contact with (lawyers) to help us understand what all this means and what we should or shouldn't be doing,” Williams said. “First thing we did.”

The College Athletes Players Association, led by Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter, won a petition to the National Labor Relations Board to become employees of the school instead of student-athletes. The school is appealing the ruling, which makes collective bargaining before the 2014 unlikely.

Private schools are considered easier targets, at least through the NLRB, which rules on private employers. Public universities are governed by state law.

Nothing good can come from college players unionizing.

What if Chancellors grow a pair and simply eliminate football...or any sport whose team goes to court?

I would threaten to withdraw scholarships.

That is what the NCAA should do. Make any "employee" inillegible due to amateur status rules.

Vandy will eliminate football before they start paying players.

So they're saying they are employees? IRS is going to tax the hell out of those kids.

Nail on the head there. This scenario has no good ending that I can see.

Rather than eliminate sports, do away with scholarships for the "union" schools.

Have walk ons for every sport. It will never happen but something to ponder.

I'm going to assume we are probably about the same age group. So....

....that would be fine by me. LSU football with LSU students. Billion dollar contracts, million dollar coaches, kids get the finger wagging if they sell a friggin autograph. I'm about sick of it. Let the NFL start a MLB style farm system.

Vandy is one of the few that could afford to pony up but would the SEC allow it? I don't think so. They'd drop football and keep their eye on basketball but what's sad is that if this thing goes on with football, basketball will be next. That will absolutely destroy the NCAA tourney where every year we see small private schools compete with large public schools.

CFB and Men's hoops would be the only real targets. The NFL and NBA can start a farm system...not using University facilities and staff.

I'm looking for the silver lining....so lets pay them say $10 per hr for any fottball related activities. Then infirm them thhat they now are expected to pay tuition, meals, and housing, it's no longer free because their income makes them ineligible per NCAA rules to have a scholly. Only then would these clowns understand they have already been getting paid!
Only a totally ignorant moron can't realize they are paid a benefit already.

Bye Bye to the non revenue grossing sports. There will only be enough women's sports at schools to meet the title Nine requirements if the schools have to pay players in the major sports. Especially the schools that have a hard time turning a profit now.

SOOOOOOOOO, shouldn't kids geting science grants be deemed employees also !!!

I will tell you how this went down, it's a money grab and Obama & friends hope to make 100s of millions of dollars.

Some in the loop, crooked Chicago lawyers gamed a few Northwestern football players into doing this, knowing the Chicago labour board was in the tank for them. Obama has appointed enough commies to the national labor board in D.C., and now you get a precedent.

The problem these commie lawyers are going to have is I assume these schools will just be kicked out of the NCAA.

Ignorant commies.

I agree, but the NCAA and university pres were too greedy, and they are going to pay for it.

True about the NLRB but this will ultimately land in the Supreme Court where it will have a much harder standard to be met. I could see private schools getting unions and I could see the NCAA booting them out.
