Is Vanderbilt the only private university in the SEC? Do all their recruits get full rides or do they have to abide by the partial scholarship rule?

Yes, they are the only private SEC school...As far as I know, they still fall under the NCAA scholarship limits.

So I just talked to a guy who played at Southern Miss and he said there's s way they get around it so they get full scholarships. No wonder they recruit so well.

Vandy can offer full scholarships based on need; its a huge advantage for them and it's perfectly legit. Free education at elite university is a big deal. I'm envious of their ability to do that.

A degree from Vandy is worth a lot more than other universities. Couple that with their baseball pedigree. Its an easy choice.

Vanderbilt has a scholarship endowment specifically for baseball that they can basically do whatever they want with.. They can put anybody they want on full scholarship..

And let's be honest, who would turn down a free "ivy league" education while playing the sport you love? Unless you're offering me 7 figures then I'm going to Vandy, and even then I'd still think about school heavily. That's the Vandy advantage.

Other schools (like SC) have built in scholarship advantages as well, but they don't offer the Ivy League degree recognition..

Opportunity Vanderbilt is a program put in place to defray the cost of attending Vanderbilt and is available to all students. It is need-based and while it is a big help, it always doesn't fully cover the costs of attending Vanderbilt. For example, Dansby Swanson had to take out student loans to attend Vanderbilt.

This is 100% false.

And unlike a lot of football players, baseball players can usually handle the academics. (OT: Read yesterday where Notr Dame football coach said every football player he coches is at academic risk & they are trying to develop a plan to help them succeed scademically; UNC lawsuit changing things. Profs less inclined to sell their souls to FB programs).

Opportunity Vanderbilt

quote:

Vanderbilt has boldly replaced all need-based undergraduate student loans with scholarship and grant assistance.

New scholarship gifts are essential to sustaining this commitment. This initiative, called Opportunity Vanderbilt, is helping to ensure that young people of every background can attend Vanderbilt, creating a dynamic learning community that benefits every student. The university's decision to replace need-based loans with scholarship support gives talented Vanderbilt undergraduates opportunities to consider career choices and educational dreams without the prospect of significant debt. Generous donors have risen to the challenge, making gifts and pledges that have exceeded $195 million for undergraduate scholarship endowment.

There is still more to be done to support the full financial aid needs of our talented students. In scholarship endowment, Vanderbilt still ranks far below many of its peer institutions. About 64 percent of Vanderbilt undergraduates received financial aid last year.

Yeah, my family was over the limit, but I knew plenty of students that would never have dreamed of attending Vanderbilt had they not gotten needs-based assistance. And something like 90% of it comes directly from the university without any federal or state grant/scholarship monies at all.

A few of the Ivies do the same thing.

Stanford (Vandy of the West) is going to tear Vandy a new a-hole in 2021.

Hope I live that long to see it.

Yup. The exact reason for the program is to keep up with the Ivies.

Yes but they weren't always the only private school. Vandy stuck around while the others decided to move on.

My parents were convinced they were over the line for any student assistance at UT and so paid out of pocket every semester so I wouldn't have an undergraduate debt. No way I was going to apply for Vandy let alone an Ivy when information was more limited. Even so, Vanderbilt really should advertise the fact that yes, $$$ are available to help. The Ivies now make it known but I haven't heard a peep to the general public regarding this and I bet a lot of parents and HS students would like to know.

They can give academic scholarships willy nilly. They have lots of cash and don't have to follow the same rules as the rest of us regarding academic scholarships.

I always wondered how the Vanderbilt's and Miami's competed with the limited scholarships in baseball, and I knew they still had to comply with NCAA rules. Thanks for the info.
