Cannot think of a better way to summarize the futility of Vanderbilt football other than telling people 2 things.
1. They can't fill a glorified High School Stadium in the middle of a large city.
2. They lost their starting quarterback to Med School.

Note: Derek Mason deserves better.

They have a very small fan base compared to other SEC schools. Nashville is far more of a UT town than it is Vandy. Hard to compete when you have never had a base of support. And this is coming from a school that just sits on a billon dollar endowment. Former Govener and Nashville Mayor Phil Bredeson use to always complain how Vanderbilt always held their hand open to taxpayer funds but never gave much back to the surrounding area. For the most there has always been a dissconnect between the city of Nashville and the private school on Weat End.

Vanderbilt doesn't (and shouldn't) give a frick. Their students and alumni are generally pretty indifferent to football.

The university hospital is the biggest employer in the state, dipshit. We do more for the state than you do, and we're a private school so I don't know what taxpayer funds this idiot is whining about.

Yeah, that's definitely incorrect information. VU hospital is the second largest private employer in the state. Great hospital though

Vanderbilt has indirectly given to the Nashville community waaaaay more than it's received. Nashville is very fortunate to have VU.

Here are are the top five employers in Tennessee:

1. Vanderbilt University and Hospitals With a campus for about 13,000 students among 10 schools, Vanderbilt University employs nearly double that many people. When combined with its association with Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Vanderbilt helps employ nearly 60,000 Nashville area residents.

One reason I'm a vocal supporter of UAB is because as a Birmingham resident, I see the how much the schools continual growth impacts the city. I think this is an important connection for any Urban university.

Sounds alot like Tulane. Tulane decided it would be better to try and be Harvard or Stanford and recruit students from the northeast and west coast instead of the south. They might be a great school, but when such a large part of your fan/alumni base is based out of town and out of state you are going to be hurting for fan support unless you engaged the local community and Tulane didn't for decades and just started again.

You have completely missed the mark on this one. I don't understand why so many people just don't understand.

Vanderbilt is a top-notch university FIRST. Much like Stanford and the Ivy League, their athletics department helps top notch students pay for a top-notch education.

2. They lost their starting quarterback to Med School.

When you have a starting QB leave for med school, THAT IS NOT FUTILITY!!! Vanderbilt is NOT an NFL factory like other "schools." I have nothing but respect for his accomplishment. If Ryan Tannihill didn't make the NFL he would have been in med school right now. You can bet your arse he will take a hard look at it when his playing days are over.

SECN money didn't come fast enough for Vandy, or they would have kept Franklin and started improving branding and visibility. Vanderbilt is not the kind of program that caters to the t-shirt/sidewalk fans. That's UT's job.

There seems to be some discrepancy between sources.
