per Coachingsearch.com

quote:

- Could Tennessee’s offensive coordinator search wrap up soon?

It’s been two weeks since Butch Jones started the search and Mike DeBord went to Indiana. It was thought early on that Mark Helfrich could be the guy, but signs since then have pointed to tight ends coach Larry Scott, who just finished his first year on staff and doesn’t have coordinator experience.

Utah State assistant Mike Canales has reportedly interviewed with Jones, and he could be in the mix for the quarterbacks job if Scott is promoted. Former Rams assistant Chris Weinke has also reportedly drawn interest.

Seems like a great choice with his connections, might end up being a horrible OC though

If Weinke is brought on it will be as QB coach.

The QB coaching search sounds like it's down to:

Kevin O'connell
Canales
Weinke

Larry Scott will get the OC position it sounds like.

What will happen first:

AU hire a new OC, UT hire a new OC or AD?

Seems like a bad choice with the heat on Butch atm.

It's a one year job for whoever they hire, Botch is gone after 2017.

Unfortunately

Well, there are a lot of rumors that they won't make the AD hire until March or April so that is almost a given to come last.

Agreed. I would say that was a major reason why Helfrich declined. No OC worth a shite would be climbing onto the Lyle train

I think it would have been smart for Helfrich to take the job. If he did well with the offense, he probably puts himself in the running for the job.

I think that's exactly why Butch made the hire. He wants someone who is already familiar with the system that we run so that there is minimal drop off in language and scheme going into such a critical year of his tenure. He wants a smooth transition and knows that he needs to get this right or he's toast.

The Mike DeBord hire seemed like a bad idea as well and he quietly was one of the best offensive coordinators in the conference last year. 2nd in PPG only behind Alabama. Scott is supposedly responsible for some of the wrinkles that we saw in the offense last year and is very respected nationally and by his peers on the UT staff. I'm taking the wait and see approach. If he kills it then great. If he doesn't, Butch had 5 years to get it right and that's on him.

FWIW I'm very happy with the most recent additions to our staff. Butch just hired a new S&C coach from the LA Rams and just brought in the UNC DB's coach that has been very successful every where he's been. I'm willing to give Butch the benefit of the doubt with Scott.

I understand that logic but it also seems so risky to promote someone with not experience in that area of OC. Butch is probably screwed either way though so I see your point.

That is why I almost think it would have been better to just piss people off and keep DeBord one more year instead of just promoting the TE coach. I get that he was under pressure to make changes. I won't pretend to have enough knowledge about your staff to say that Scott can't be a good OC or hasn't provided a lot to the offensive staff.

Your offense as a whole was very strange at times. In some halves you looked like the best offense in the league. Other halves you looked like one of the worse.

DeBord made some questionable calls that had me scratching my head, but I was pleased with what he did for us for the most part. For better or worse the offense went as Dobbs did. When he was on the offense was deadly. When he was off he couldn't hit a routine 10 ft. throw and was an absolute drive killer. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Guarantano now that Dobbs has graduated.

^This. Nothing whatsoever wrong with the offensive scheme. It's effective and produced some great numbers despite everyone hating the Debo hire. Scott is highly thought of and was responsible for some the nice wrinkles added in last season but offense hasn't really been a problem. Far more concerned with getting a halfway decent QB coach. We don't really need any major changes at OC -- a bolder caller but nothing earth shattering.

The scheme is fine, the play-calling and in game adjustments from DeBord are what stagnated us.
