Until this changes, it is doubtful that ATM will ever win the conference...

ATM is a great school / great facilities / fans / stadium is very unique / tradition rich(even if some of those traditions are a little weird to most).

but even with all of those great resources Texas HS football is keeping them from being able to compete at the elite level in the SEC.

Very little run defense is being coached in high schools. The offenses all play very uptempo and are pass heavy.

if you look at the stats from the Bama game you will see that DH had a huge majority of his yards just from within the tackles.

this is reflected at schools like Baylor/TCU/Tech.

Rules need to be changed within the HS level to bring back more importance to traditional defenses.

Either that or ATM needs to recruit their defensive front seven from the deep south.

I'm genuinely curious when a little 8 school will ever win it. It might not be in any of our lifetimes.

Kliff Kingsbury is going to call you out for downing Texas high school football style of play.

This will have to change. Most overpaid coach in the country.

Very true. I live in Texas and was talking to my very good Aggie friend, and he was explaining how the level of offensive players in Texas is so far superior to the level of defensive players for recruiting purposes. Everybody here wants to play offense.

LSU beats Alabama and the conference championship is ours. So I don't think you need to worry.

Every high school in Texas runs the spread, or some version of it. When O lineman have played 4 years with their hands on their knees catching D lineman while pass blocking, they arent use to firing out of a 3 point stance and drive blocking. The D linemen are accustomed to the same style of play, they become pass rush specialist and are deficient at fighting off blocks at the point of attack. It kills me to see a team with a first and goal at the 3 yard line run plays from the shotgun.

meeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

why should HS ball in a state be changed because of the on field failures of one of the CFB teams in it?

Everyone knows what kind of ball they play in texas. If aTm (or anyone) is going to offer defensive players at those breakneck speed up tempo schools, they know what they're getting. It's their job to either coach them up when they get on campus, or don't offer them in the first place and go get someone else who fits your scheme.

I think the actual logic behind what OP said is correct, but in no way do I think any rules should be changed. That'd be like the falcons trying to tell UGA to change their scheme so we could funnel more players there. It's silly.

This weekend has loss written all over it. Ole Miss on the road is just an afterthought and they're not just going to go away. Y'all will struggle with them way more than you think you should Saturday.

The OP is mostly right about HS football in TX, but one of the state's best programs - Katy HS runs a lot of I-Back power running sets and has been to state CG something like 9 times out of the past 18 years playing smash mouth football.

They are the exception though.

You misunderstood. I wasn't advocating a rule change or advocating that those high schools change their philosophy to appease A&M. I was simply saying that he makes a good point as to why the universities in Texas can't run the football or stop the run. The kids they bring in aren't used to doing it

Might also add that there is a lot less hitting at every level of football these days. Everyone is scared of the concussion protocol rules. You can't "drill" your way to shedding blocks and making tackles.

oh well yeah, I'm with you there. I just took issue wiht this:

It's not a HS's job to send players to college football teams. It's the HS's job to win HS football games.

Running the football really isn't a problem. TCU and Baylor have run the football extremely well out of the spread. On a lower level UH runs it very well with Tom Herman's offense. A&M's problems running the ball have more to do with our own recruiting issues than an issue in Texas

I agree stopping the run is a problem though

My son's being taught this every fricking day at practice. Amazing how the high school coaches are training these young kids these days because of safety concerns.

So how do you explain the good defense players that come out of Texas.
