I'm going to safely assume the Kentucky coach knows a lot more about the matchup than you

I don't. It's always up for discussion though.

Interesting take considering we beat Indiana easily with a midweek pitcher.

Some coaches believe that winning game 1 is important enough to use your ace. Some risk it a little to gain an advantage in round 2. For me, baseball is pretty crazy and more often than not I would go with the ace. That way you can always pull him early if you have a big enough lead and have him come in the pen late Sunday or pitch some on Monday if needed. Or you can ride him out and save your pen for the rest of regionals.

Good post. At this point, even the best teams can't assume their hits will fall and there are some very good pitchers on some of the lower ranked teams that can have an outstanding day. Game 1 is critical.

I figured we'd save him for game 2. Don't think it's a mistake though.

Yea I am really hoping that LSU will throw Poche on Friday (not the ace I know, but not a weekday guy either). Get you're team off to a great and confident start to the weekend and make sure all three of your weekend guys get to throw in the regional. Especially considering if you don't throw your Sunday guy in the regional and then go 2-0 in the supers...you're looking at not having your #3 arm throw for 3 weeks before throwing him out to the wolves in the CWS. I hope we don't do this to Walker

edit: Walker not Watson

Game 2 is just as important as game 1

It is illogical to start your ace in game 1

Sometimes even a 4 seed has 1 great pitcher, and sometimes you want to make sure you win that for sure.

Xavier beat Vandy in game 1 of the Vandy regional last year 15-1. Rhode Island beat South Carolina in game 1 of the USC regional last year 5-4.

Solid pitching by the 4 seeds won them a game...well Xavier's offense helped a lot too.

LSU will not use their number 2 starter to beat the worst team in tournament

Who said anything about LSU? Texas Southern is awful, they have no pitching. We most certainly wont use Lange or Poche against them.

I was just stating some 4 seeds do have a good to great pitcher and you have to be careful in some instances.

Clearly a very unique situation as one of Vandy's players died 2 days before.

Heard Nick in the radio. He said winning the 1st game is very important and it sets the tone for the whole weekend. He is probably hoping we get by the weekend and put Hjelle in the 1st game in the Supers.

He explained it pretty well in his press conference yesterday with the media after the regions were announced. He basically said that you have to approach every game in a regional like it's your last and that winning that first game is important to get that momentum.

You also have to keep in mind he was on staff at Kentucky in '06 when we dropped that first game to Ball State and didn't make it out of the region.

Ohio has a starter with a 3.27 ERA, not a typical 4th seed

And as WM pointed out, we beat Indiana with our midweek guy. He did suggest that there may be some change in the rotation after Hjelle.

I read the Hogs will be going with their usual weekend series rotation. I think that is a wise decision.
