How exactly did JF screw up the buyout?

He telegraphed like a son of a bitch which direction he was going in for a coaching hire (aka the reporters at the window), which locked him in when the negotiations happened and it turns out McElwain had this HUGE buyout.

If Foley would have had a LITTLE bit of ninjaness he could have met with McElwain in secret, which would have given him more leverage to negotiate down that buyout. Because he got caught red handed (and therefore any other hire would have been the dreaded "second choice") the Colorado St. AD knew he had Foley over a barrel and took advantage of that fact.

Almost NO team gets a full buyout in those situations, especially when the buyout is SO fricking large. But Foley had to cough up $6.5 million of that $7 million simply because he apparently doesn't know what flight tracker is.

He is a great AD, but sometimes he feels like he is from a different era. Some era that has integrity and frugality but not social media.

FYI $5 million total from UF including $2 million for a future UF - CSU game in the Swamp. Coach Mac paid the extra $2 million. It was too much IMO.

And yall are paying Mac. You can't tell me his salary didn't take that buyout into consideration.

Or course it was. Foley got bent over a barrel because of the press. It was pretty hamfisted on his part.

With that said Foley did make it better by breaking up the buyout over time. So its not like it will actually hurt the bottom line.

But the "largest buyout ever" for a coach not named Nick Saban looks bad.

I'll respectfully disagree with this assessment. Heres why:

I don't think JF cared that the media could see him at JM's house, talking about who knows what. Don't you think if he really wanted privacy, he would've conducted all of the important info at the coaches office, behind closed doors?

And who's to say that the buyout was negotiable? Maybe the buyout terms were iron-clad, and no matter who came in, the price would remain the same. We don't know. We weren't there.

JF is one of the most powerful AD's in the country, and at the time, was completing a search for a high profile football program. Of course the media will be everywhere, tracking everything. I don't believe, at all, that the AD of Col ST took advantage of any ideas or negotiating that he wouldn't already be privy to, as the boss of JM.

And I think you are unreasonably white knighting for your boy. I will break it down:

Catching him at the house wasn't the half of it. The reporters had pictures of the plane with the UF bags coming out of the cargo hold. It is VERY VERY obvious to me that Foley DIDN'T expect to be tracked like that (because it didn't happen with Will because Will was out of left field). My biggest proof is the INCREDIBLY pissy comment he gave after he was questioned after the return trip:

quote:

"We gave you what we gave you,” Foley told a small group of reporters after he stepped off the plane. “That's the end of the conversation. There's nothing else to report."

That sounds like a man who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

This is college football, almost EVERY buyout can be settled for a lower amount. This was THE BIGGEST buyout between two programs OF ALL TIME. Let me drop some facts on you:

quote:

The total $7 million buyout is seven and a half times the average buyout paid by a school to another school over the past three years.

LINK

And Denzel would say, BOOM! And if you look at that source you see that ONLY Texas (who is known for NOT being frugal unlike your boy Foley) even comes CLOSE to that buyout. Most are below $2 million.

What makes it all worse is that it is obvious that McElwain didn't even know that buyout was so large. He basically learned that fact from a reporter during the process. Him paying $2 million of it (which again is more by itself than any non-Texas buyout) is basically him saying "I fricked up and didn't read the damn contract before I signed it."

False! Completely false!!!

-Arkansas hire Bret without anyone knowing beforehand.
-Vandy got raped (yes pun) by Penn St. without pictures of the Penn St. AD leaving the plane
-Nebraska hired that Oregon St. coach without anyone knowing.

Is Penn St. and Nebraska big enough programs for you? Because I can keep going, because EVERY fricking major coaching hire since maybe when Dooley was hired was handled better than how Foley handled this search.

I will give Foley his credit- he is the best SEC AD. And frick, without Florida and those AAU meetings we aren't in the SEC right now.

But seriously the man isn't perfect, he fricks up like everyone else. This was one of those times.

If McElwain works out no one gives a shite. If he doesn't than the $7 million is the least of UF's worries.

It just is kinda funny for me to see fans of a program who wouldn't pay for a god damn IPF years after they became "the standard" (or pay top dollar for a REAL head coach post Urban) to try and say that cheap arse Foley meant to pay that $7 million from the start. No fricking way. He got bent over.

Me too, thank you for the civil conversation.
