Interesting Forbes article on the true value of athletic scholarships for the top 25 rated football schools. The author does calculate the career earnings of a graduate at each college compared to someone without a college degree. He's figured the true value is close to $2 million dollars.
One of the interesting calculations is the median mid-career salaries of graduates from each school. It's no surprise that an Auburn education is the most valuable of all the SEC schools of those ranked in the top 25. South Carilina has the lowest median salary.

I wish more people could see the big picture and would man up and take this side. These kids are being given a golden oppertunity, and to many of them completely blow it

I love this article. I've been on this side of the argument for a while and I hate when people underestimate not only the value of the education, but the facilities, services, travel, perks, etc.

Yeah, no doubt. For those who complain about student-athletes not getting paid, a scholarship is worth around $7,000 - $30,000 per year in tuition (depending on the school), plus room & board, travel expenses, tons of experiences, an education that will put you on a path of success for the rest of your life, and contacts and name recognition that will help you with your future career - something that most other college students could only dream of having.
There are more important things than actual dollars in the here and now. We live in such an instant gratification oriented, materialistic society, that people can't see what a free ride all the way through college at a major university can offer a kid.
And, the kids (only thinking about how much money they have in their pocket now) can't see it ether. Very sad.

I'm totally against giving athletes more than a full ride scholarship. Some people argue that these kids come from poor families and need some spending money. They should do what other kids do-take out a loan or get a part time job.
Some people also argue that the colleges make so much money off football that the players should get some of it. A lot of these kids never pan out and those that make it big will get their money from the NFL. If colleges pay athletes a stipend, they'd have to raise tuition rates even more. Many athletic departments are already in the red. Colleges are in the education business. These kids should get their degree and be happy their education was free.

Why would this not be surprising?

I was mostly surprised by how close the majority of SEC schools were in value, all ranged from 75-80k really. WTB standford education.

The value is not 100% accurate. The value of a college education is much higher than a high school education, the difference between the two is the true value.
However, the degrees that football players receive is NOT the average. They end up in programs such as those in general studies which do not pay the average salary.
Higher graduation requirements have pushed MOST players into easier degree programs.

The players should get the full cost of attendance, which other scholarship students get.

Amen.
I'd have killed for a free ride through college, I had a nasty wreck which left me with a lot of medical bills that I used student loans to help pay for so that I could finish college. People really have no clue what an amazing chance they have, I love football but it would honestly be difficult to turn down a scholarship to Vandy or Stanford, and some of the top programs due to the fact their degree means so much, and the fact that they practically give it to you in many cases due to you play football.

Posted by Wesel Vs Unicorn South Carolina was actually the lowest by quite a bit. That's pretty surprising to me.
My bad, I fixed it.

Good point and I agree. Due to the demands of DI football, MOST players aren't Pre-med, engineering, or physics majors.
