Terrible what he is going through and his family. I love this sport, however we need as a society to address this fully. Not sure much will be done.

And, yes, I know some of this is Germans.

there's been a shite ton done just in the last ~5 years.

It shouldn't take a worldwide PSA to let people know that carrying a ball 25 times each weekend until people physically bring you to the ground could lead to some issues.

I mean, what do you want us to do? Cancel football?

A lot has been done and I'm sure a lot more will be done in terms of research. But all you can really do at this point is acknowledge the dangers and make sure everyone is educated on them. Let people choose if they want to play or not.

right, and people have been choosing for 100+ years to play because of the rewards that come with it. It just feels to me like in today's society, that more and more people (NOT talking about tre mason here, I'm speaking in general) are trying to look for a handout and demand money for their piss poor health later in life.

There's hunting accidents all the time, people still hunt. Car accidents, people still drive. Unplanned pregnancies, people still have unprotected sex. I don't see why people are attacking football, or even act like its surprising that repeated head/body trauma over 30 years isn't good for you. Isnt that common sense?

Mom made the diagnosis of CTE? Still need to evaluate for mental disorder.

The only current test for CTE is done by autopsy.
Not saying he doesn't have it, but it doesn't usually show up this early in life. Could be some other brain disorder.
Football may not be the cause of what is the matter with him.

Addressed.

I realize it's not that simple, but at this point, people should be well aware of the risks. If you don't want to take that chance, don't play.

The article mentions CTE.....

Fellas, I just don't know. But we need to do all we can to make the game as safe as possible while still keeping the integrity of our favorite sport.

More and more of our favorite players are falling victim to the injuries early or later in life..

It is that simple though.

For some reason there isn't some mass outrage over bodybuilders having muscle and joint pain later in life after lifting 500 pounds everyday. It's common sense.

You can't make 300 pound specimens running full speed into other people safe

Have you seen the helmets they're wearing these days? Have you seen the rules that protect people from head shots? This is about as safe as the game has ever been from a prevention standpoint.

As long as there's still tackling and not touch or flag, there's only so much you can do

and they were 100% aware of those risks when they signed up to play and potentailly be multi-millionaires by age 22. It's a gamble.

Not possible, I'm afraid. Football is a violent sport.

Make law, pass it

Just because the article mentions CTE doesn't make it so.

That's become the standard go-to bad guy for whenever something happens to a football player.

Naturally, it is going to be blamed for Mason's troubles even though symptoms like he has don't normally appear until the late stages of CTE (if they appear at all) BUT he's right in the age window for the signs of schizophrenia to appear.

But yeah, let's all declare that it is football-triggered CTE.

He's got real, legitimate mental health issues that need to be addressed but the odds that they're CTE related are pretty danged low.

Don't support the sport financially and don't let your kids play football. That's about as much as you can do really.

Agreed

Mom could be right, but I don't see any reason for concluding she is.

It's a known risk that players are taking. It's only going to end when they remove pads and helmets altogether - you won't be seeing anyone leading with their head in that scenario.

At a certain point, you can educate people all you want on the dangers. Some are still willing to risk it.

I highly doubt Mason's issues are related to CTE.

That's become a boogey man for every single thing that goes wrong with any athlete.

People sometimes have mental problems ya know.
