I don't know him, and I'm glad he's a dawg. But, damn Will Clark strikes me as an a-hole.

He was a cocky bastard, but he was my favorite player when I was growing up.

That swing

Will is my favorite baseball player of all time. I remember watching him play at the dude, collecting his baseball cards, and meeting him once when I was in jr high. We have the same temperament and even share bithdays. My childhood sports hero.

Far from it, actually. He's competitive and always has been.

Clark would have stayed in state

He told Bob Brodhead that he would have gone to LSU if Bertman had been there at the time.

I felt that way, too, but then he played for the Cards for a year so he was our a-hole.

state was the only team in 1983 that gave a damn about baseball LSU hadn't even hired Bertman.

Alabama was very good under Barry Schollenberger throughout the 1980s. In fact, they played Texas for the CWS title in 1983. Dave Magadan was on that Alabama team.

Yeah he was definitely an a-hole.

I've always loved Palmeiro but last night definitely shed him in a more likeable light than Clark.

Doesn't take anything away from Clark though. That swing was a beautiful thing.

Also, if Palmeiro doesn't wag his finger at Congress that whole thing never gets blown into the story it is today. Palmeiro was never juiced out of his mind. He looked to be one of those guys that was just trying to prolong his career.

I agree. Rafael was never disproprtionate. I have never had any issues with him at all as a baseball player. Also it just seems like he's a genuine guy.

Agreed. It sucks that neither one of his sons ended up at State. Neither are elite talents but it would have been quite nostalgic to have one or both play here. It's a shame that the whole Polk thing went down the way it did when he hung them up.

Had a high school mate that instead of going to the reds when he was drafted out of high school he went to UNO. They were one of the better teams in the south.

I remember the days of MSU baseball very well. College baseball was basically non-existent but MSU gave the south a team for the nation to reckon with. MSU had Clark, Palmeiro, Bobby Thigpen and Brantley all on that team. Good lawd. It has changed so much since these days. These 4 guys probably dont go to college now.

At the end of the documentary they said that MSU team in 1985 changed college baseball because the rest of the SEC started caring. LSU would go to the CWS a couple years later and win it all six years later. Georgia got a natty in '90. Auburn started going to the CWS.

There is something nostalgic about that team. College baseball was not on the radar. ESPN carried the CWS and one game a week. Clark and Palmerio were legends. They both hit four home runs in a single game, Clark was pounding 500- footers. By the time the stories got to the sandlots of the South, Palmerio was hitting 4 homers a game and Clark hit a 600-footer.

To put it in perspective, Palmerio won the triple crown in the SEC, and led the home run race by one and the RBI race by two over the guy that batted behind him in the order.

Maybe on the field where you can be that competitive and passionate, but off the field, I know Will very well and he's far from an "a-hole". He's a very genuine guy and a hell of an outdoorsman.
