Thoughts on the precedent set by the playoff committee

While everyone is talking about how today's final four ranking makes a conference championship obselete I believe the committee took a hard stand to not let a 2 loss team into the playoffs.

The politicians will change the rules every year to fit their agendas.

A playoff would be best served by having teams "qualify" like in the NFL.
Whatever the "qualifications" to make the playoff are should be set in stone prior to the first game of the season.
Otherwise, it is just another beauty contest.

They will be forced to let a 2 loss team in eventually, but only when there are less than four teams with 0-1 losses.

PSU got the best deal. They would've been slaughtered by Bama up front on both sides of the ball, but instead they get to go to the Rose Bowl, where they have a good shot at a win. What is the big prize of making it to the playoffs? You get your arse whooped by Bama.

What I'm not getting is why people are ignoring that the committee also put Washington in, almost certainly on the strength of its conference championship win. Three of four CFP members won their conferences. That is almost the exact opposite of making CCs obsolete.

Yeah, as a Bama fan, I don't see how any of our fans can complain bout this decision after 2011. Best teams are the best teams. Unless deep down you are kinda worried bout OSU. I love the chance at some revenge

The precedent that was set was picking the 4 best teams.

The factor of a conference championship only comes into play when comparing equal teams. In this year's situation, Ohio State had only lost one game (albeit to Penn St) and Penn State had been blown out by Mich (who Ohio State beat)and had been beaten by Pitt. Ohio State also had a superior SOS. Ohio State was not equal to Penn St.

There is no precedent other than they put what they thought were the 4 best teams in. They thought that 1 loss Ohio State and 1 loss Washington were better teams than 2 loss PSU, Michigan, and OU. Yes, unless a 2 loss team is by far a better team, a 2 loss won't get in over a 1 loss. Same as it has always been for 100 years. I really don't get why there was any debate. It is a 4 team playoff and there were only 4 teams with 1 or fewer losses.

Maybe, but what do you think Bama would do to them? PSU got the better deal.

Why is everyone so shocked? We knew that there would be case where a team who didn't win their conference would eventually get in. We just all assumed it would be an SEC team that did it.
Even in the BCS, teams that didn't win their conference got a chance to play for a title. So this is nothing new. Everyone is being a prisoner of the moment right now.

Exactly. The conference title designation and head to head scenario is more of a tiebreaker to decide a close call. If it is not close, they don't matter.

The precedent that there are no precedents. It will change yearly.
Not even H2H matters if it fits their agenda. FSU lost by forty to Louisville, yet FSU gets the NY6 bowl

Chairman said earlier today the BEST 4 teams trumps all criteria. Champs, loss to whom, etc. At the end of the day it's who they think is the 4 best. There really are no qualifying objectives other than to look good and have only one loss.

Penn State is the Champion of the best conference in football this year. They also beat Ohio state head to head. Ohio state finished 2nd to Penn State in its own conference. Idgaf about Ohio state only having one loss especially when everyone with any type of football sense knows that Michigan got hosed by the refs several times in the crucial closing moments of their game with Ohio State. If they let Ohio State in then they should come in as the 4 seed with Penn at 3. They leave out Washington.

Best teams? BS
Two teams play in same conference. They have the same record. H2H is over 40pt blowout. Loser of the blowout gets the nod. They think the LOSER is the best team. Their eye test sucks
