There are better hires for a third of the money.

The melt would not be worth

You think that a knock-down shooter would elevate South Carolina's 150th ranked offense into one that could win a title? I'm not buying it.

Martin has had a Top 50 offense twice in his career: his first year with Kansas State (the year he lucked into Michael Beasley), and his Elite Eight year (when that last Huggins class were seniors). Even those last two tournament teams he had at Kansas State that both won a game were pretty offensively challenged.

He's just not a great offensive coach. If he lucks into another elite talent, maybe he'll win a title. If not, I think he is what he is: a coach who will have you in the postseason just about every year (whether NIT or NCAA), might get to the second weekend every once in awhile, but will never truly challenge for a title.

That sounds more than good enough for South Carolina or Missouri. I wouldn't want it at Florida.

His K State players apparently wanted him gone because he called them cocksuckers and pieces of shite. Glad to see SC doing well, and hopefully these rumors aren't true, but if they were indeed true, I wouldn't want my son play for him.

To be fair, Martin isn't winning these games through offense

SC just bludgeons their opponent to death through defense

That's all speculation. I mean it's certainly possible, but he's chilled out a lot since he got here.

He's a great life coach now too. Always coming out with these inspirational quotes and his players would run through a brick wall for him these days.

He's passionate. Your son would be lucky to play for a coach like Martin. Btw Martin and his disagreements with the AD came from a player receiving money because he didn't have money to eat, and Martin fought for him to play but his AD didn't stand behind him.

That's all fine and dandy and hopefully either the rumors aren't true or he has changed his style of coaching.

But if this shite is true..

quote:

Wally Judge, Nick Russell, Ron Anderson… the list could go on much further. But this? Nothing he had experienced had prepared him for it. He traced it back to when he “lit up” Will Spradling during the latter stages of the game against Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

Even his loyal assistants–and they were nothing, if not loyal–had been shocked at the things he screamed at Spradling, after the sophomore guard had missed a free throw. “You mother f***ing c**k sucker, what the f*** are you f***ing thinking out there?!? You’re a f***ing embarrassment…” and on it went, sucking the life of the huddle. Brad Underwood (Martin’s top assistant, and loyal K-State man) tried to soothe things over with Spradling afterward, but it was clear a threshold had been crossed. It was then that Spradling decided to join the exodus that several of his teammates were planning for the end of the season.

I'd have a lot of trouble reading something like this and allowing my son to be on that team.

Again, happy for SC, and hope that stuff is exaggerated.

Yet on the other side of the spectrum...

quote:

His logic on this topic has been consistent and unwavering since the time it arose during Kansas State’s NCAA tournament appearance. One of his seniors, Jamar Samuels, was wired $200 by his former AAU coach the week the tournament began, and was subsequently kept out of the Wildcats’ second game, in fear of his being declared ineligible. Kansas State chose to protect itself. It lost the game to Syracuse. Samuels lost what turned out to be the last game of his college career. At the time, Martin stated his position on the matter: “He’s, in my opinion, done nothing wrong.”

let's be clear, it's not like he was being a saint in sitting Samuels. It was the smart thing to do.

not many people are going to think accepting 200 bucks was a bad thing to do, especially if you need food and whatnot.

He didn't want to sit him at all. He was given money for food and felt that he did nothing wrong. Kansas State disagreed, and that's where the issues between Martin and the AD stemmed. So he fought for his players.

I'm not saying Kansas State was wrong for doing so. Simply showcasing that he cares about his players, and always has.

so not wanting to sit a player in the tournament over accepting 200 bucks = caring about his players?

Look, I'm not denying he doesn't care about his players. But that's a bad example. He needed him to play.

He had half of his scholarship players ready to transfer based off of the fricked up shite he said to them, allegedly. I don't know how anyone can just brush that off.

“I coached 16 years in the same inner city in Miami that I grew up in,” Martin said, according to a transcript taken by the Kansas City Star. “Do you know how much money I sent to kids that played for me in high school when they were in college because I knew where they came from? I knew they didn’t have a father figure. I’m not going to tell you who they were, but I sent them a lot of money over the years to make sure they could take their girlfriends out to the movies, make sure they could wash their clothes and do all the things that scholarship money don’t cover.

“They don’t have an option. It’s not like they can work while they’re in college. They can’t find ways to make money. When there is no money at home, who is going to help these guys?”

that's very good of him. But the players he actually did coach in college, he allegedly treated like shite. 4 of those transfers stayed on the team after personally meeting with the AD and giving him an ultimatum. Which is why K State didn't even try to counter SC.

Look, I hope he's changed or that all that shite is made up. But him sending money to former players doesn't make him a saint. Particularly if these accusations are true.

When did I say it makes him a saint? You argued with me when I said he cared for his players. I didn't even deny that he did the shite you're saying other than it's all been speculation.

The only thing I've been arguing about with you is that he cares for his players. Which you seem to disagree with for some reason.

if true, I have a hard time believing he actually cared about Spralding at least. Maybe the other players, but you don't speak to someone like that if you care about them IMO.
