thoughts on 6 team expansion?

Have teams 3-6 play a week after the conference championships while the top two have a so called "bye." The third seed and sixth seed team would obviously play and then the fourth seed and fifth seed teams would play. Winners would be the new 3 and 4 teams . From there you continue the 4 team playoff. Thoughts?

Would rather just go to 8 teams at that point

8 teams
Best scenario in my opinion.

It keeps the most people happy, every P5 conference champ is in plus 3 "at large" spots

meh / no just switch to old bcs formula and leave it alone at 4 teams. I don't wanna have to discuss more 2 loss teams or potentially a 3 loss teams or worse who sneak in and win their conference championship.

frick byes.
I think most people feel the same way, but the argument people have against the expansion is that these kids are getting beat up and are overwhelmed. so with adding a "bye" I think that would take away some of that argument.

No expansion. Period. Ever.

8 teams would diminish the regular season even more and pretty much make conference championships useless.

On the contrary, it would add to the argument. Imagine Clemson playing MIchigan and running the risk of having players injured and then having to play Alabama at less than full strength. We're not talking about college basketball here. The odds of losing a key starter for the following week are higher.

Bingo. My exact thoughts. You let a team like Western Michigan in this year with an at large bid at the 8 seed and let them get whacked by Bama. I believe this year the 8 teams would be Bama, Ohio State (At Large), Clemson, Washington, Michigan (At Large), Wisconsin/Penn State (Big 10 winner), Oklahoma, and Western Michigan (At Large).

I can see that. On the contrary, it could make the conference championship games that much more important because if you win, you're in. Usually the conference champions do not have more than 2 losses. Very rarely do you see a 3 loss conference champion.

I, for one, don't give a shite about making fans at Western Michigan or Oklahoma happy. There is absolutely no rational reason to have Western Michigan travel to Alabama for a playoff game.
Someone else complained about how having cupcake games ruins the regular season. Yet here we have people in this thread rewarding a team who played 12 cupcake games with a playoff berth??? What in the ever loving frick?

You could say the same thing about the 4 team playoff as well. An extra game before the championship could hurt a team when they are playing against a top four program in the country.

There is no way teams 5-8 have a legit shot to say they should play for the title. top 4 is enough.
The playoff is getting like the targeting penalty: out of hand.

I still want someone to explain why they complain about Bama playing cupcake games out of one side of their mouth, then out of the other side of their mouth they argue why a team that plays nothing but cupcakes should get into the fricking playoffs.

I'm talking about a bye. Having a bye is an inherently unfair advantage due to the risk of injury for teams 3-6. There is no unfair advantage with only 4 teams.

Who says Western Michigan would even be in an 8 team playoff?
