Thoughts and observations from the LSU/Wisc game (long)

Positive things:
1) While most assume Les just pounded the ball and should have called more passing plays like always, this was not the case at all. LSU was much more balanced, with 58% runs to 42% passes. Close to 70% runs last year iirc.
2) Fournette quietly had a good game (138 yds/6.0 ypc/3 catches for 38). I really liked the wheel route he got for a long gainer. That needs to be called 2 or 3 times a game.
3) Defense was very good. Valentine finally played and was a beast. Needs conditioning to be effective later in the game. Arden Key had a great game with 6 tackles/2 sacks. DBs did a great job, with the exception of covering the TE. Michael Divinity a true freshman LB played a lot and played well.
4) JD Moore (fullback) was a beast crushing people in the hole. =)
Negative things:
1) Malachi Dupre was horrible. Did not fight for the ball, did not use his obvious height advantage/leaping skills to dominate very small corners even though passes were thrown high for that reason. Was targeted 11 times with only 3 catches. Only 2 targets were uncatchable.
2) Gamble (kicker) needs to be benched. His sole responsibility is to kick the ball deep into/out of the endzone. He had 0 touchbacks and 1 penalty for kicking off out of bounds (this is a bad habit he has). The freshman Culp was allegedly "kicking off into the stands against the wind and rain" during a practice. Les needs to put him in there then.
3) O-line was terrible. Several missed assignments and blocking whiffs. Even Pocic and Clapp messed up some.
4) Harris HAS TO be better aware of his situation. With a minute to go, first down, on the opponent's 30, down 2, you CANNOT heave up an off-balance prayer into a pile. You are in field-goal range. Run for a couple up the middle or throw it out of bounds. Geez =(
Synopsis:
LSU has some things working well, and some things that are pretty broken. But a 2 point loss to a decent P5 team, essentially on the road, isn't season ending, and a good year is still an attainable goal, despite what some may think.

That's a lot of fancy words just to say you can't pass.

Actually we can but we aren't doing so consistently. Dural had a great game receiving, but it was off set by a really bad game by Dupre.

You'd likely receive more discussion about this on the LSU board.
Many threads today on tSECr that probably should be on tRant.
Interesting observations though.

Just watched this game on youtube. Your tackling was pretty terrible. Harris is worse this year, your oline is soft.

Oddly our work filter blocks Tiger Rant. So I am here =) I like it when others post similar stuff about their teams, I can't watch all the games.

My impression from watching the game on TV is the passing game is too predictable. They need to mix more 1st down passes in there, and they need to take more down field shots. It also seems like they had no Plan B when it became obvious Wisconsin had game planned to stop Fournette. Reminded me of the Bama game last year.
One thing Bama has done under Saban is using the pass to open up the running game. McElwain started it in 2009, and it has continued since. LSU takes the opposite approach, and has Les's entire tenure there. It's just not working anymore.

That is a good write up. I think LSU could still have a good season but I am concerned that Harris has a case of the yips and that your O Line isn't ready for the grind of SEC play. It can be done, but its going to be a dogfight of a year.
Before LSU fans start getting the vapors and accusing me of trolling, I'll be honest, I'm worried about the Arkansas O Line this year. Except for Bama there are some very evident flaws in every West team.

Nope. Just a case of the Les.

I know its just one game but some of the LSU fans who thought they were right there with A&M and Bama when it comes to WRs need to eat some crow.

Harris should have tucked the damn ball and ran instead of throwing straight to the Wisky player, hell he was in field goal range for the win. That is exactly how I thought LSU would win the game, Miles always plays a close to the vest game and pulls it out. Not this time though.

Its not the ratio that matters, its the plays themselves. There is a reason nobody in college football uses the i-formation, 2 wr set anymore, its because its not efficient. Defenses don't even need to load the box against us, we do it for them by implementing tight power formations. If we run the same plays out of more spread formations we are instantly better... Then all our pass plays are long developing play action fakes with only 1 or 2 WRs. My high school offense was significantly more complex than what LSU is running right now.

Have you watched Malachi Dupre play before? That was his worst game by far. It doesn't mean he is bad though. LSU will probably have at least 5 WRs on this team get drafted when all is said and done.

Yes and he is a good player but Bama and A&M still have a better group of WRs.
