LSU is lifting a year-old policy that prohibited opposing marching bands from performing during halftime at Tiger Stadium, the school announced Wednesday — the end of a weeklong ordeal that riled up the national band community.

LSU’s new plan involves reconfiguring seating areas in the South end zone so that visiting bands may take a more direct route to the field, reducing the congestion and safety hazards created by the way they previously entered the field. And when visitors are scheduled to perform, the LSU band will play before them, allowing ample time for the visiting band to exit its seats and enter the field in a precise manner.

“There are serious safety issues to consider
in adopting the proper plan for on-field performances by visiting bands,” LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a written statement. “When both our band and the visiting band are scheduled to perform, there’s the possibility of having over 600 additional people converging onto already crowded sidelines while the game is in progress. There are legitimate safety concerns that can affect our student-athletes, so we have developed a plan to ensure a more secure environment for everyone.”

Risk management officials had recommended the school prohibit opposing bands from playing at halftime, a policy enacted last season, something that seeped out publicly last week. The move prompted a backlash against the school from the band community and college football fans.

Other schools have policies similar to the one LSU had enacted, said Patrick Dunnigan, current president of the band directors group and Florida State’s band director for the past 25 years. None of them, though, has the football and marching band tradition of a place like LSU, he said.

LSU’s small sideline space on the west side behind the home bench was forcing the issue.

To prepare for their halftime show, the 200 or so members of the opposing band would leave their seats in Tiger Stadium’s lower bowl about halfway through the second quarter and stand on the sideline. At the same time, LSU’s 300-plus member band, the football team, television cameras and equipment and the media were be on a sideline, which has shrunk over the years, Nunez explained.

Seems reasonable. Glad y'all reversed it.

Just for comparison sake regarding the sidelines. AU allows visiting bands to perform, but you can see the difference

This is a very reasonable statement that clearly explains the concerns that LSU had in this matter and the steps they are taking to address it.

Which is why the stumbling, bumbling, fumbling cluster frick of the last week or in regards to this is so bad. Making a vague statement about safety, then collapsing under pressure within a few days makes the LSU AD look like a first class doofus. At the very least y'all should fire your PR people.

That's what the Aggie Band does anyway...or at least at the 5 minute mark.

The problem I had with the whole thing is Tiger Stadium hasn't really changed that much in that part of the stadium in the last 50 years. Why all of a sudden was it a safety concern?

Couldn't agree more. Joe Alleva isn't even all that bad at his job. The department is making money hand over fist and we're about to kick off in one of football's greatest venues, he's just TERRIBLE at PR.

Lesson for all.

You don't tug on superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with (fill in the blank)

Most bands do that.

I know at LSU we left like 5 min after the second quarter started and spent a good 10 min in that tunnel. We actually don't even get to see most of the game.

We didn't even get to the sidelines until there were 5 min left in the half. By that time LSU's band was already there. If there is a hazard it's sitting in that tunnel with no security or anything.

I don't think letting the home band perform first is a good idea. I saw someone post yesterday that if the bands take too long for halftime and don't allow the teams to get back on the field the home team is the one penalized. The home band usually does stop with enough time left on the clock but who knows what an away band will do or how long they would take.

Also I loved how most of those pics in that article were of the MDB.

If you had the money instead of being a poor you would tear down that eyesore of a stadium and build a nice one like TA&M. The bands could play with no problems.
But you can't afford a real fix.. So there.

We're literally going to make a change to the stadium for this stupid shite and give the opposing bands their own tunnel.

A lot of schools have small sidelines.

UF's is ~25' on the sidelines and north endzone. ~14' on the south endzone and the corners are even smaller.

Okie St is ~17' on 3 sides.

Kyle is small, but I don't have measurements. Probably around 20-25 on all sides.

LSU's is ~22' on the sidelines thanks for the fence and chair seating. Its rounded on the endzones. The north one's largest point is ~34'. South is ~17'.

Okie state truly looks dangerous when the band is down there. Only a matter of time until somebody gets hurt there

Gotta agree with you here. Our AD not only looks like a first class doofus, he IS one. Most of us think he is the biggest problem in our Athletic Dept.

Yep, why didn't they just release that statement in the first place.

I believe that was just the last visiting band to perform at Tiger Stadium, and the pix were all from the same day - November 8, 2014.
