What? The graphic about all the transfers and early exits to NFL? Yeah. No one else has ever had to deal with that without declining

The real reason for LSU's "decline" is because it isn't a decline at all. Historically you are about the 4th best program in the program in the SEC. You flirted with 2nd best for a brief stretch and now you've gone back to your historical place.

We should be looking at reasons for LSU's "incline" from 2002 - 2011 and see if there is any way you could replicate those conditions.

What I like to refer to as the Petrino Problem.

Now, before I elaborate, Bert has managed to screw the pooch all on his on. This is not a get out of jail free card for him.

The Petrino Problem is shown in what happened when he first left Louisville and when he showed himself the door from Arkansas. A coach comes in after him, expected to find a loaded roster after Petrino's success... only to find a good chunk of Petrino recruits either never made it to campus, were kicked off the team before their first year, or transferred within a year.

Bert took the job at Arkansas because he thought he was, to use a country phrase, cutting a fat hog in the arse. John L. Smith obviously had a mental meltdown because just a year before Arkansas was a top 5 team!

Instead he found himself coaching a team that had effectively lost half of its recruits over a two year period because Petrino went for players with questionable grades and legal histories.

Coach O's problem now is that not only is his roster really thin in key places, its loaded with a lot of poison pills that no one ever bothered to straighten out.

LSU has real legit talent. Don't kid yourself. But they are like a home that looks gorgeous on the outside but when you get inside you find cracks in the walls and termites all over the place.

It can be fixed, their recruiting grounds are as rich as can be. Its going to take some work and they are going to have to recruit the right player to make it work though.

Yeah, people don't seem to realize how many signing classes are badly eroded after 2-3 years. Still, that chart looks like LSU has been hit a bit harder than most, especially since the trenches are extremely important to their style of play.

Edit: I should say, the trenches are important to football in general, of course, but teams like LSU and Bama rely on controlling them more than most.

AP top football programs historically

Basically says that LSU is ranked 11th out of all football programs and 3rd in the entire SEC. So I think that LSU is a top program and we flirted with #1 for about 10 years.

The problem is that Orgeron is letting the guys do whatever they want. No organization, no discipline, no accountability and they practice like a high school organization. He is too much of a friend to the kids and not enough of a true father figure. Add to it that his best 2 players are selfish, prima Donna types and it equals a poorly prepared football team. This shite mirrors the Mike Dubose era at Alabama.

Petrino also struggled to evaluate non-skill position talent. He truly sucked at it and left Bret with some gaping weaknesses there. It'll be interesting to see how long he can keep things moving at UL once Jackson is gone. Now, he had real success with them before Jackson (and before Arkansas, for that matter) but he can no longer rely on opposing defenses struggling with his offensive set-up. CFB has adjusted to a considerable degree.

It varies from 2nd to 4th in the SEC by publication, 9-13th nationally.

We are a top ~10 program in CFB throughout history. Among SEC schools only Bama is within the top few spots nationally. We are not top 10 right now, we are not in our "traditional" place.

It's not an article about players leaving for the league. It's about players being hurt and transferring in spots of great value (defense and OL) to us. Oh, and the receiving corps, which we were FINALLY GOING TO start relying on but now can barely field.

Tiger rant keeps melting about how hiring CEO meant "no rebuild." And that's true. But shite's done changed between hiring and now as far as transfers and injuries. We'll deal with it.

Thats just crappy recruiting. Wasnt Coach Eaux over recruiting for lsu before being promoted?

He showed up a month from signing day 2015. The gap mentioned is mainly the '14 and '15 classes.

^ In regards to this from another poster, no. We just need to avoid replicating the 90s, the true historic outlier, and we'll be just fine.

Yep. Those gaps are filled in with 13ths, 16ths, and so on...
that's an 80 year time frame and you found 4 10+ year gaps without a top 10 finish. Those gaps are sprinkled with successful top 15 seasons. They are the "down years"

We have finished in the final AP top 10 almost 25% of the time we've fielded a team during its 80+ year existence.

There are not many programs with more high finishes. You have more of course, along with 8 or 9 others

Like I said, we are a top ~10 program all time. We have no business settling for less.

A program is not ranked nationally by their average final national rankings. It relative to everyone else. Have y'all averaged #1 final AP ranking for 80+ years straight? Because y'all are arguably the #1 program of all time

LSU football has a hell of a historical resume

Ranked 3rd in the SEC because of that 10 year stretch. You've usually been 4th. Not a knock.
