He's not a $3 million a year coach. I think most people in the industry would agree on that. However, he can recruit big names and lottery picks to a Mizzou team that has been going down faster than Michael Sam on home coming.

This hire, if it brings the Porters to Mizzou, will inject life and energy into a program that needed it badly. The possibility of a team going from 8 wins to 20+ is a reality, something no one could have predicted a couple weeks ago.

He managed to bring multiple draft pick caliber players to a California team with high academic standards, I see no reason why he could not do it here.

Mizzou had to overpay for a coach due to the state of the program, the possibility of NCAA sanctions, and the legitimate social issues that happened at the school in the last few years.

A quick look at his history:

Missouri St:
3 years prior - 169–117 (.591)
Cuanzo - 61-41 (.598)
Since - 88-106 (.454)

Tennessee:
3 years prior - (.648)
Cuonzo - 63-41 (.606)
Since - 31-35 (.470)

California
3 years prior - (66-36)(.647)
Cuonzo - 62-39 (.614)

He's a .600 coach wherever he has gone. Which translates roughly to 20 wins a season. His ceiling was 26-9(Last year at MO ST) and his floor 11-20(first year at MO ST).

7 of 9 years he was in some kind of post season and has been to the Sweet Sixteen.

Would Mizzou basketball be ok with 20-26 wins a season?

Well, look at the last 10 years of Mizzou basketball:

214-152 (.585)

Number of 30 win seasons, 2.
Number of Sweet 16 seasons, 1.
Number of Elite 8 seasons, 1.

Norm Stewart, the best coach Mizzou ever had (.660)
No Final Fours.

I think a lot of Mizzou fans want that Elite Coach that will bring a Final Four or Championship to Missouri. However, if you look at the school historically, Cuonzo Martin fits in perfectly with what a Mizzou fan should expect from its program.

Here's the wildcard.

NBA Players from the state of Missoui:

If Cuonzo can recruit Missouri, specifically St.Louis and Kansas City, keep the top talent in state, Mizzou will compete at the 20-30 win total every season.

This should be Mizzou fans expectations. I think Cuonzo can deliver on those expectations.

I think it is a great hire, he isn't a great coach but is an excellent recruiter but KA was fricking awful all the way around. Don't look at the money, it isn't yours and it was needed for the risk of coming there versus the given where he was. Worst case, your attendance will quadruple next year and he will bring in talent like you haven't had in years plus will maybe rope off St Louis and stop the bleeding there. If in three to four years you fire him or he leaves, the next guy will be able to step into a MUCH better situation than he inherited in talent, recent success (probably), and interest in the program.

Win/win. Good hire. Add in the fact he is a native son unlikely to leave on his own and it should seal the deal. Missouri produces enough basketball talent that you frickers should never be left out of the dance, ever.

Good luck being excited about watching his brand of basketball. It's infuriatingly boring and frustrating to watch.

I'm satisfied that Cuonzo will at the bare minimum reestablish a floor of stability from which to build.

If he does more than that, great. Plus it can't hurt our PR with East St. Louis on the football side.

I assume your basketball team has been running in the red for most of KA's tenure given the clear empty arenas.

If you overpay for Martin but offset it with actually filling your seats + donations, financially you may end being better off

So much from Tennessee, he was there 3 years. Had sanctions and still made it to a Sweet 16 in year 3.

Delusional

Rick Barnes has done much worse in *2 years.

They fired him yet?

No. We still made like $4M profit last year.

Is he awe inspiringly great? Probably not. At the moment, however, what y'all needed was someone who can stop the bleeding. Zo is a fine candidate to do just that.

He is a good recruiter with ties to the area and if he has you winning ugly then at least he has you winning. If he, at a minimum, restores Missouri to being respectable and sets the table for the next coach then he's worth the three million easy.

No he didn't. The NCAA hammered Pearl not VOLS.

Barnes has only been at Tennessee two years and walked into a disaster following Tyndall. Hiring that creepy assclown was the real mistake imo

Mizzou fans explaining the recent history of BasketVOLS to UT fans the past week has been very entertaining.

UT fans defending chasing off a coach who got them too the Sweet 16 in year 3 is equally as entertaining.

Barnes just completed his 2nd year a week ago. If you are going to troll at least get it right. Dumb shite.

Wasn't really a troll, simply an observation, I happened to get the number of years incorrect. The statement still stands, he hasn't broken .500. People thought Cuonzo had shite in his first year and still managed to go to the NIT.
