I forgot that Shug coached B'Ball at Georgia before coming to Auburn. This is a pretty funny story.

I like the fact that Shug didn't know what a point spread was....

Wonder what they were trying to sell them for? A dime? Maybe a quarter.

Hell, you could probably get a couple of beers and a hooker for .25 back in 1946. We should ask scrooster, I think he was like 50 then.

From the article:

Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp said Shug was “as fine a football coach as he was a basketball coach.”

Fun fact: until Joe B Hall won his 271st basketball game at Kentucky in 1984, Ralph "Shug" Jordan held the SEC record for most varsity men's basketball and/or football victories as an HC at his alma mater (95 basketball wins + 175 football wins).

I really need to read a book about Shug's life. Sounds as though he had an amazing one.

Maybe one of you Aubies can elaborate but wasn't Shug a decorated war vet?

Yep.

Before he was named head coach of the Auburn University football team, before he led the Tigers to a record 176 wins, before he was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame, then-Capt. Ralph “Shug” Jordan was one of 156,000 troops who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

“I think about him every year about this time. A lot of people’s fathers left and didn’t come home,” Jordan’s son, Ralph Jordan Jr., said. “…We’re losing that generation. They’re almost gone.”

A member of the U.S. Army’s First Engineer Special Brigade, Jordan was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his action during the invasion.

“Coach Jordan was a war hero,” said longtime friend Wheeler Foshee, who met Jordan at Auburn in 1953. “He was also an excellent football coach.”

He was a combat engineer and made both the Normandy and Okinawa invasions.

Got wounded and earned a Bronze star @ Normandy.
