The SEC is not down, more programs are competitive.

This narrative that the "SEC is down", or the conference is "better when teams like Florida and Tennessee are winning" has to stop.
Alabama and Florida are not at the top of the league right now, but it's not because their recruiting has fallen off. Programs like OM, State, UK and TAMU have simply brought in better players and it is showing on the field. National exposure for our program in particular has never been higher and it's paying dividends on the field and in the homes of major recruits across the country, not just in our state or even the South.
In my opinion, the conference has never been stronger as a whole. As the season plays out and more is determined on the field, you will see once again that on any given Saturday a team with the right scheme and attitude can come out with a W. This doesn't mean the league is down, if anything this shows that we are on the up and up.

So the East is just really, really competitive.

The SEC is down. Our bottom used to be a headache for most teams, but now the bottom three teams can't beat the MAC, almost lose to FBS teams, and lose to Tortillas who throw the ball 70 times.

The SEC is definitely down, and it's down because there are only a few quarterbacks who have proven they're any good. just because Ole Miss is having a good year for them does not mean the conference is more balanced. UT is bad, Arkansas is bad, Auburn is bad, South Carolina is bad, Vanderbilt is bad, Missouri is bad, Kentucky is ok, Florida is ok, Mississippi State is ok. Ole Miss, LSU, UGA, A&M, and Alabama are really the only teams in the conference that can be argued are good right now. It's been quite awhile since there were this many bad teams in the conference in a given year. All those "bad" teams will be struggling for bowl eligibility, and it's only week 4.

no, sec is down. there are no great teams that I have seen so far this year. Honestly I am not sure if there is a legit "great" unit on either side of the ball for anyone that you can look at and say "that is the class of college football".

I agree with this, and 3 of those 5 still have some uncertainty at QB. I'm not sure Bama/LSU/UGA are confident in their QBs leading them on a game winning drive with 2 minutes left

and at one point late in the season had three top 5 teams from the same division unless I am getting my years mixed

Down for now since we don't have the one or two top heavy teams that don't lose to anybody.
It remains to be seen if Georgia out of the East or Ole Miss, LSU, A&M, or Bama out of the West can hold the standard.
We will know soon enough, though.

yep, in the last week of the 2011 season, LSU was #1, Alabama was #2, and Arkansas was #3 (LSU/Arkansas played each other that week). In the final rankings, Alabama #1, LSU #2, Arkansas #5

The medium layer is more crowded I give you that, but bad teams are probably worse. and we are yet to see if there is at least one true elite team. Maybe UGA becomes that.
Compare that to say 2006 when you had 3 elite 11+ Win teams that dominated solid OC opposition , 4-5 other good teams and no layups huge difference.

We are more competitive as a whole, but lack a dominate team that just kicks everyone's butts.

The SEC is down. Auburn, Arkansas, Missouri, Tenn, Vandy and South Carolina are all below power five averages.
This does not mean the SEC top tier is not going maybe win the championship. But, to be honest, I do not think we will know how good the top SEC teams are right now until the start of November.

There aren't any super dominant teams in any conference this year. But the SEC has suffered lately from shitty QBs.
