Nebraska was so awesome back then. Shame that program has ended up the way the have. Would really like for them to get back to national prominence.

you forgot to add the 2007 georgia national championship team in there

That 1995 Florida team absolutely steam rolled their entire schedule and crushed everyone. Every win was by double digits and usually 21+. Probably Spurrier's best team.
I expected them to demolish Nebraska that year. Boy was I wrong.

VOLS ran into a fricking buzzsaw at the orange bowl. A young TheDarrell was very upset that night

Nebraska went in dry. Multiple times!

I don't think any national title was on the line for Tennessee when they played Nebraska because Michigan had already won the Rose. The Coaches put the Huskers at #1 after Osborne announced his retirement and they beat the Vols.

Don't forget our AP ones.
1971 vs. Nebraska (L, 6-38)
1973 vs. Notre Dame (L, 23-24)
1978 vs. Penn State (W, 14-7)
Scratch that - forget the first two.

They got a Bama boy as HC now. He'll get them back soon.

You are correct about the 97 game. Since #1 Michigan won the Rose already the day begore there was basically no chance for UT to win the title anymore when the game kicked, however it was still the designated "national championship game" of the Bowl Alliance (2v3). That year finally got the big ten and pac10 on board from then on.

1995 Nebraska is the best CFB team of all time.

Yep these were 1v2 bowl games back when they were super rare. They were unofficial national title games, not official ones. Hell the Coaches poll was still awarding theirs before the bowls till 74.

Georgia had one too. They were #1 and lost to #2 Penn State in the 82 Sugar.

This thread is full of fail.
You must be in your twenties. Don't fall for all the hype.
Before the BCS, #1 vs. #2 games were simply a joke. An independent school (like Florida State, Miami, or Penn State) would play against the likes of East Carolina, Rutgers, and Temple and then finish 11-0 (duh, with a weak schedule like that) and then face the winner of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game (both of whom had spent all season beating up winless teams like Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State).
The SEC, meanwhile, was busy beating up (and eliminating) itself. The SEC champion was always guaranteed multiple losses. Even the Big Ten and Pac-10, which were weaker than the SEC, still similarly self-eliminated themselves from the #1 vs. #2 match-ups.
Basically, the #1 vs. #2 games always featured teams that "excelled" against the powder puff schedules that Big 8 and independent schools had.
