Good read. Talks about why he chose Bama and the impact of the Clemson loss.

I'm just happy he didn't post his message on the Notes iPhone app and post a screenshot to Twitter.

I enjoyed that letter and the perspective he gave of the recruiting process, and the point he made that not every kid enjoys the recruiting process was interesting. You think they just got to be loving the attention and great food, etc.

This made me laugh a little in reference to the loss against Clemson.
quote:

I know everyone thinks of Bama as this big, bad Goliath-type figure. Like we’re the Darth Vader of college football, floating above the SEC in our Death Star or something.

He was a heck of a football player and that letter shows a glimpse of what a good young man he is. No doubt, Saban has this college recruiting and coaching thing figured out. As much as I hate to admit it I also believe he is sincere in what he is doing and helping these young men grow. DAMMIT!!!!

Good for Allen and he did a great job of expressing himself in that letter.

Pretty solid read. I think one important takeaway is this
quote:

Alabama football is about having the discipline to see yourself as part of a bigger picture.

The ability to humble all-world, late-teenager athletes is something that I think enables Saban to keep the program rolling.

Obviously Alabama does some things that may be unsavory to some, and they surely bend and break some rules. But I think that single quote sums up the decade-long run that Bama has been on.

Jonathan Allen is an outstanding young man. And it would still be true if I weren't an Alabama fan.

He's not gonna just come back for his 5th year?

He's played 4 years. I'd love to have him come back as a coach one day though. He's one of my favorite Alabama players ever.

I don't think I've ever seen anybody redshirt their 5th year. What would be the benefit there?

Coach Saban isn’t going to sit there, and put on a big smile, and promise you this and that. He isn’t going to tell you that you’re a surefire starter, or an All-SEC shoo-in, or a first-round NFL pick. He isn’t going tell your mom, “Wow … this has to be the best pot roast I’ve ever had.”

Actually — you know how I know that? Because Nick Saban turned down my mom’s food. Straight up: Coach came over to our house for a recruiting visit. And my mom, knowing we were having company over, had done some home cooking.

So, of course, when Coach walked in the door, my mom offered him some dinner. And wanna know what coach said to Mom?

“I already ate.”

If you split up the Bama roster between the guys who played in the Army All-American Bowl and the guys who played in the Under Armour All-America Game, who would have the better team?

quote:

Everyone here, and I mean everyone, has the talent to play anywhere. This is a place where high school All-Americas can wind up as backups. Where legit five-star recruits can find themselves playing third-string. And if that sounds crazy, well, for some people, maybe it is.

Great read.

But, after this, and Eddie's article, I was getting a little suspicious of these guys' writing abilities. Then I noticed the "contributor" part. It's still a great article and sentiment, I'm just no longer wondering how our football players are writing better articles than most of the media.
