Dear SEC Fans,

I would like to take this opportunity to shed some light on the LSU / Florida scheduling issues. There are some important items that were not discussed in public.

Virtually all hotel rooms in Gainesville, at economy hotel locations, were expected to be occupied from Thursday through Tuesday with evacuees. This meant nicer accommodations were beginning to fill up. Locations such as the Hilton informed us they would be obligated to provide rooms on a first-arrived basis. Additionally, they projected they would be understaffed and potentially short on supplies such as food for their dining areas. In short, there was a great risk that LSU's squad would have faced difficulties that were, quite frankly, unfair.

First responders in our area were obligated to respond to issues related to Hurricane Matthew. We found it unethical to put attending fans, players, and staffs at risk of not receiving adequate levels of security and medical care.

Our composite risk assessment indicated that postponement was the most prudent move.

We were very sympathetic to LSU's concerns about missing a home game. We are well aware of the fiscal constraints and budgetary shortfalls within the state of Louisiana. However, it's very important to understand that due to the hurricane, the Univ. of Fla. and the city of Gainesville were already going to miss a home game and the attendant revenue. To miss two home games means a decrease in annual revenue of approximately 20% for many local businesses.

After the postponement, LSU, through Athletic Director Joe Alleva, made it clear that under no circumstance would LSU travel to Gainesville in November. The SEC Commissioner informed both schools that if the game was not played, neither school would be eligible for the SEC Conference Championship game. Also, both schools were informed that if the game was not played because LSU refused to travel, the game would be considered cancelled, not forfeited.

We at the Univ. of Fla made the decision to play the game in Baton Rouge knowing that a victory would secure the SEC Eastern Division Championship, and that additional revenue would be generated as a result. While that revenue cannot make up the loss to local businesses, it can help offset that loss. And, of course, we wanted to give our players and coaches the opportunity to win a championship.

Our players, coaches, and staff were made aware of this decision. As a result, what we witnessed this past weekend was a Florida Gator Football Team that put together a tremendous performance on behalf of the University and the local community, as well as themselves.

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some background that many fans were not aware of. Quite frankly, LSU should not have refused to play the game in Gainesville. The SEC Commissioner was prepared to make every effort possible to insure both schools did not suffer financial setbacks for a lost home game. However, the conference was not in a position to make up for two lost home games and the local revenue for the city of Gainesville. And, yes, this did create some negativity and ill feelings between the administrations in each school. However, the game is over and we are hopeful the extra revenue over the next two years, as well as that from winning a championship, prevents our local community from suffering unrecoverable damage due to this situation. As Gators and SEC members, we will continue to cheer for our fellow SEC members and I wish both schools much success.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Foley

Both schools tried to do what was in their best interest.

Sankey fricked up and didn't take a stand and make a decision like when the SEC made LSU play UT in 2005.

The end.

Yeah there is no spin in that at all. Just ignore the fact that you buried your head in sand until Thursday.

Biggest rivalry game this week and you're still melting over LSU forcing you to play in BR this year.

Honestly, besides us securing a new coach because of this game, another positive is that the UF-LSU rivalry has become nasty and has kicked up a notch in intensity.

That's a good thing, right?

Sigh.

Some people are just ignorant. Then again, others are gloating, manipulative, narcissistic, sociopaths. Like Jeremy Foley.

that's pretty damned classy

as a Dawg, I am for LSU in y'alls annual game every time (with the possible exception of if your beating them creates a 3 way tie that puts us in Atlanta, which has never happened yet)

Not this year, this year I was pulling for the Gators, mostly because I was disgusted with the reaction from LSU admins and fans to the postponed game.

Everyone knows about the incredible turmoil that the state of Louisiana has been through due to natural disasters, especially hurricane damage; so their reaction to this situation was somewhat alarming.

Yes, I know that Miami & FSU played. I know that Saturday turned out to be great game day weather.

BUT - I also knew at the time that the real issue centered around accommodations and travel arrangements for people in central Florida. The governor had called for evacuation - projections were very scary.

I remain disappointed about how LSU folks reacted to the whole situation. YES, they have a valid argument that Florida could have maybe agreed to play on Sunday or even Monday; but that does not excuse the vitriol we saw for this situation.

So bring on the downvotes, because that is my "rant" on this topic...

BTW.

Why didnt you push the game up? Why didnt you leave options available for Sunday or Monday?

BTW.

Games played in the State of Florida that week: 3
Games played in Gainesville that week: 0

BTW.

Other sports teams FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA played that weekend.

BTW.

LSU offered to fly in, play the game and fly out that same day. Fri, Sat or Sun. So your hotel argument is moot. Also offered to play in an empty stadium. So your security and EMS argument is moot.

Care to explain these away Foley? I hope you get caught in a riptide and carried out to the sea on your first day of retirement. Self-centered, win-at-all cost, manipulative, pieces of shite like you are whats wrong with society. Your parents generation would be fricking disgraced by the way you and your ilk act.

Dear Sir,

I can assure you that Joe Alleva made no such offer. I invite you to submit a public records request to LSU, asking for emails from the athletic offices there pertaining to this game. You will not receive any records demonstrating such an offer was made. That being said, as stated above, we have put this game behind us and wish nothing but continued success for a tremendous and storied LSU athletic program.

Regarding the empty stadium, security is always a requirement. The Univ. of Fla. inspects and secures all athletic facilities a minimum of 24 hours prior to an event. Additionally, at least one ambulance is on site for all football games, as well as paramedics stationed at Aid Stations within the stadium. Due to the hurricane, we could not assume these capabilities would be present.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Foley
