The lack of movement in the AP poll is pretty upsetting

The good:
Alabama goes up one spot
Notre Dame goes up two spots
TCU goes down one spot

The bad:
Texas A&M only at 16 after beating 15 in convincing fashion, behind LSU who didn't play.
Michigan State staying the same (5) after a lackluster opener against Western Michigan
Oregon staying the same (7) after giving up 42 points to an FCS school
Teams like Georgia, Florida State, Clemson, USC, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss either move down or stay the same after whooping their opponent convincingly.

Seriously, at some point people have to realize preseason rankings are bullshite and let the results on the field show the true positions, instead of sticking to a rigid grid and not allowing movement unless a team loses. Who in the world doesn't believe Georgia, FSU, USC are better teams than Michigan State? How in the world is Texas A&M behind LSU?

I was listening to nationally syndicated ESPN radio this weekend, and Max Bretos, who I'm typically a big fan of, was explaining his ballot.

His logic for 3 or 4 of his top 10 votes was something along the lines of, well their schedule is easier so I expect them to have a better record at the end of the year. Robert Smith, his co-host, was taken aback. "So, you don't vote for the team that you THINK is better, just the one that you think will have a better record."

Bretos was shocked that Smith didn't follow his logic.

Bring this topic back up when September ends. Right now, who cares?

It's understood that LSU is always better

A lot of people don't believe that.

This will work itself out shortly.

This has been an issue with college football voting for a long time.

Part of the voting process for some involved is looking ahead at the schedule and trying to project where a team will finish up. This rewards teams early for an easier schedule when the easier schedule will help them in the end anyway.

I never understand why teams aren't just ranked where they stack up. And start stacking them up around week 5.

Is think significant movement based on one week of looking good or bad is probably too elastic for my liking. Bad and good games happen. I would have no issue making significant changes based on a bigger sample- 3 to 5 games or so.

This is why their should be no rankings until week 6. one of the things the playoff poll gets right

Of course, it does drive a lot of preseason yapping so it has its advantages.

And you're falling into the trap. You've now assumed preseason rankings, which are supposed to be seen as meaningless, as rigid. Because LSU was 14, they should stay 14, regardless if they are wholly unimpressive, or if they didn't even play. Meanwhile a team that knocks off a top 15 team in convincing fashion should be behind them. That line of thinking is flawed.

I mean Sparty didn't play great, but the team they played is a top level MAC team, and Sparty played on the road. I'm not defending their performance, but that could play into the decision. IE they played someone with a pulse so it's easier to gauge them

Depends. Describe what "or what" will include.

I think you've got some circular reasoning going on.
