stopping the run with regularity, despite any offensive scheme your opponent employs.

Agree and disagree. Stopping Texas Tech's running game won't help you much. But in the SEC's case, I pretty much agree.

A good run game (via smashmouth or spread) with a capable QB.
A top 5 SEC Total defense.

disagree. State has always stopped the run very well before this year. Where did it get us?

You must have a Top 10-20 total defense to compete. Higher if you want to win.
Oh yeah, and the fans must stay the whole game...

I see it a lot like the NFL where situational running is important. You don't have to run consistantly the entire game to win, but you better be able to run when you have to (Third and short, running out the clock ect). Teams also need to have a strategy that gels between offense and defense.
Look at Alabama. Shorten the game and trust the defense. Now look at LSU. They don't really seem to have any idea what they want to accomplish on offense. Hence them getting into trouble with less talented teams. That and they haven't recruited the lines well and that's what really wins SEC Championships.

Usually the team the runs the ball the best and stops the run wins. Even last year UF was the best rushing team in the SEC with a spread offense. They got explosive run plays with the midget backs and converted tough yards with Tebow.
The most important units on any team are Offensive line, Defensive line, and QB in that order.

All depends on what you consider an acceptable RYPG relevent to the question. < 100 = Outstanding -- 100-120 = Good/Commendable/Acceptable -- 140/150+ = Potential for a .500 SEC record
IMO
