The 1959 Ole Miss defense gave up 14 points all season. Should have made the list.

6. Vanderbilt (1922): Led by College Football Hall of Famer Lynn Bomar, the 1922 Commodores posted one of their best seasons ever in 1922, led by the team’s dominant defense. Vandy closed the year with an 8-0-1 record, and it held seven of nine opponents scoreless (it allowed 16 points in two games against Texas and Tennessee). There aren’t many numbers preserved from this season, but to even score a point on this Vandy defense was such an accomplishment this unit couldn’t be kept off the list.

The 1969 LSU defense set an NCAA record (which I think still stands), yielding 39.6 yards per game on the ground.

2011 LSU could also be GOAT, esp. sice they gave up 123 points in 13 game reg season to 8 bowl teams, 5 Top 15 teams and 3 Top 3 teams, and split with BAMA....

Except for getting clownstomped in the game that mattered most.

Ok, that's why it said 38-39

We'll go with the 1938 Vols that shutout 8 of 11 opponents and gave up 16 points the
entire year.

Shutout Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.

The article is wrong. Tennessee lost to USC in the Rose Bowl in 1939

OM's bowl performance should nullify them from this list.

Or LSU running for nearly 300 on them. No "top SEC defense of all time" allows that.

Agreed. They should have out our '59 squad on there instead.

And you test dildos for a living.

LOL at that POS list. Dude was not seven alive in 1938 to see the defense he is talking about. As far as LSU the Chinese Bandits were no even mentioned. They were by far the best of that era for us

He didn't have to be. It's common knowledge that those were some of the best defensive teams of all time. They set records that will never be broken. Shutting out 18 of 19 opponents over a two year period is unbelievable no matter the era.

SEC fans who crap on that 2011 LSU team just show how stupid they are. It is like a test of who is stupid and who isn't. You give the 2011 LSU team respect and you show you have a brain. You crap on them for getting beat in the mulligan bowl and you show how stupid you are. It is simple.

AJ McCarron made perfect passes in that game. He was on fire. Still, Alabama had 5 FGs in the 4th quarter. If LSU's offense led by the QB who will forever remain nameless had not completely been a trainwreck, that game would have been a different story. The defense finally gave out and gave up a TD.

Still, I am not sure why people here disrespect them for that one game where they had ZERO offensive help. Again. Stupid.

Horrible list. How can 2009 Florida and 2014 Ole Miss be on the list over 2005 Bama, 2009 Bama, and 2008 Florida? 1961 Alabama nowhere to be found on the list? 1964 Arkansas being ranked despite not even being in the SEC at the time. And how can the top two defenses be teams that played at a time before the two platoon system was implemented? Do they really think that the two best defenses of all-time are composed of players that played on both sides of the ball for the entire game?

Alabama's 1925-26 defenses shut out 14 of their 20 opponents over that span and you don't see anyone talking about them as the GOAT. Why are they not on this list? Their run was almost as impressive as 1938-39 Tennessee's. Maybe even more so as they didn't lose a game during that stretch.

Because the author has no idea what the hell he is talking about. That's why. Any defensive stats pre-WWII should be taken with a grain of salt.

You're 100% correct. The two platoon system wasn't even implemented until 1945. There was no specialization so the quality of the average defensive player back then was significantly lower. Also, I bet players often didn't put forth their maximum effort on offense because they wanted to conserved their energy for defense.

I'm not disrespecting them at all, but they DID get clownstomped in the game that mattered the most.
