UGA fans, can you explain why they ever started putting the A on UGA? Yes it is the Athens campus, but is there other UG sites that I don't know about? Normally you see this on satellite campuses (AUM, UAB etc). Is there some history on why this is the case? Always see people making reference to this but never heard why it ever started.

Anyone want to make the transition to UGA format?

I always figured it was more because Georgia is abbreviated as GA. Hence U of GA = UGA. Not so much about Athens.

I believe this is correct. However, UAL isn't used for Bama or UFL for Florida, etc.

I had always thought this was the case but I had seen one of those "classic" type of hats that show the seal etc and it said "University of Georgia Athens". Which led me to believe that the A did stand for Athens.

UGA I = 1956

Since the dog was named for a term already in use UGA must at least predate 1956
(in response to comment on 2 letter state postal codes)

I always sorta thought it had dual meaning... as in with the A in 'GA' and teh A standing for athens.

i may be giving them too much credit, though.
