Under Coach Sherill the 12th man kickoff team, although I was wrong about it. I always thought there was one non "student-athlete" selected to represent the 12th man tradition, he would wear #12 and would play on the kickoff team. I did not realize or remember the entire kickoff team was made of traditional scholarship or walk-on student athletes. Did this tradition go away after Coach Sherill left College Station?

Yeah, I could be wrong, but I believe Fran brought it back as one walk-on wearing number 12.

RC took it away when our kickoff team started hurting us in real games.

Fran would bring back "all walk-on" kickoff teams when the ags were way ahead.

Yes. I'm pretty sure RC Slocum got rid of the entire team deal after they allowed a TD, though I may be misremembering that. It was definitely cool as could be during Sherrill's years with the entire KO team consisting of walk-ons. Those guys were completely fearless and got the crowd pumped up in a big way. They were ninjas. It was after my time, but the best moment to me was one of those guys stealing ND's Tim Brown's "really extra special" towel, and Brown getting ejected after his resulting meltdown.

ETA: The Brown thing was in the 1988 Cotton Bowl, 35-10 A&M.

And, that could be why I thought it was only one walk-on or non student athlete would be on the team wearing #12.

Sherrill did this at State too. Not wearing #12 but they would have tryouts for walk-ons to cover kick-offs.

All players on this years 2016 kick return and coverage squads for the spring game were walk ons, this was true last year as well.

The walk on player that distinguishes himself the most with effort during this display is awarded the right to wear the 12th man jersey during games. From that point on he can earn a scholarship position through effort and spirit.

Kevin Sumlin brought the tradition back a couple of years ago at Jackies urging. If you watch his press conference he talks a little about it this year.

By the way you're gonna get kicked out of the club for associating A&M with "cool". Just sayin'. But good luck to you.

Hard to argue with Jackie's impressive run of national championships.

I am probably in the minority, but I always liked Coach Sherill. He did not always follow the rules, but show me a NCAA football coach who does. I thought that he got the best he could out of the players on the teams that he coached.

Aw hell EVERYBODY liked him. Well, everybody other than Billy Brewer and Texas fans. I'm not sure what nefarious activities he had going at MSU. At A&M I always thought his downfall was basically telling the NCAA to shove it. More than once he said, "You can't prove it." That was his entire defense. That might actually work in 2016. In the '80s, not so much.

RC changed the kickoff team from all walkons to one walkon wearing #12 and 10 scholarship players.

Jackie attempted to replicate the all walkon kickoff team at MSU but didn't get enough viable candidates at the tryout.

Aggies had an all walkon kickoff team for the spring game.
