And that was Eric Berry.

Such an amazing player and story. Hope he kills it tomorrow.

He's still the greatest college defensive player I've seen.

I love Eric Berry. One of my favorite players ever, but I wouldn't go that far. I don't even think he is the best defensive player to come out of UT. That moniker belongs to the "Minister of Defense", Reggie White.

This. Reggie White is at the very least in the top 3 of the best defensive players in the history of football. I would only rank LT ahead of him.

He's the best safety in SEC history imo.

EB is Vol royalty and was long before he signed with Tennessee. That said, we did more than one thing right if we're being fair. Even so, Eric Berry is among the best of us and not just as a player but as a human being. The fact that he wears Inky's number in the NFL says it all.

I agree with you there but I think Barnett may well be even better. It's nostalgia and love of Reggie that makes us shy away from saying so but I can tell you this Reggie would be the proudest man on Earth relinquishing his sack record to a fellow Tennessean. I truly believe he'd be DB's biggest fan right now.

I like Eric Berry a lot, but I wouldn't go that far.

Even just limiting it to Vols, I wouldn't say he is the best.

As for DB's, I grew up watching a Hog that was IMO, the best S the college game has seen and that was Steve Atwater. But, that was also when safeties could head hunt and make a WR scared to death about the thought of coming over the middle to catch a ball.

Berry is great though, no doubt about it and his story makes it that much better.

Got to give the not to Berry over Barnett for posiition depth in the NFL. There are basically 15ish game changing type DE's in the NFL at any given time. I think there are only 2-4 game changing safeties. The drop off between the #3 safety and #20 is way larger than the DL gap. Barnett will be a good one, but a special safety is so much more rare. I've watch every Chiefs game and EB has taken his game to an insane new level. He isn't just ball hawking and covering massive ground, this year I think he has become the hardest clean hitting safety in football. He is freaking killing running backs when he comes up in support. Every single game he has 2-3 hits that make the announcers and crowd impulsively say, "Oh!"

I know what you're saying but DB was taking over games this year on a regular basis. We needed a TO he'd force one, a stop he'd get it. It got ridiculous at times because we'd be like ok DB we need a TO and BOOM it would happen.

EB was fricking fantastic at UT and he could make plays that changed the game but never as much as DB has this year and that's saying a ton. EB would face down anybody including Tebow and come out at least even on the whole deal. DB OTOH found ways to come out ahead virtually ever time.

He's underrated because he's new. If we revisited this a few years from now there'd be few questions but because it's recent it doesn't sound as good.

That said, no telling how DB will turn out in the NFL tho I think he'll be great he still has to prove that. EB obviously has proven it. I think they're both great vols and their positions are so different that I don't feel the need to be either team EB or team DB.

They hired Lyle.

That was the right thing as far as Bama is concerned.

RW(Reggie White), LT(Lawrence Taylor), and DT(Derrick Thomas)

The three baddest men and 6 baddest initials in the history of defensive football.

He was fun as hell to watch. Al Wilson is one of my faves. He could will his team to win. Derek Barnett showed some of that this season -- he made plays whenever we needed them.
