All those epic fire Dooley paintings gone. In all seriousness they should preserve that layer - it's got all kinds of interesting info in it. Give the anthropology students something to do.

What's cool is that if they wanted to they can image and/or dissect that section and uncover just about all of the messages.

Find someone with OCD about picking paint and orderliness. You will have an entire gallery of history.

Apparently, it was 3 freaking tons. Would never have guessed that. I always wondered how much all the painting added but good god. That's mind-blowing.

quote:

UT Facilities said the paint was several inches thick and heavy machinery was needed to remove it. "It was too much to make it budge. It turned out to be somewhere between 2-3 tons of paint," Caudill said.

And there may be some hope about preserving this beyond the fact that UT called in heavy machinery to move it instead of breaking it up:

quote:

UT has not yet decided on what they will do with all of the paint that has fallen off the Rock. Many have mentioned they would like to see it saved, since it is a piece of UT's history.

The article seems to think this is the first time it's happened and given a combo of things: 1. we moved it because of construction a few years ago 2. the university at one part started repainted over messages are done lot more often than folks realize - it's never been a 'sports based rock' although the media likes to act like it because few care what students have to say on anything else 3. repaints have never been even (some - students and UT alike may have used latex house paint which is prone to sloughing off) and those uneven repaints gave water the ability to act like chisel given the amount and constancy we've had lately. 3. the apparent weight - WOW.

Hoping for preservation more than ever.

Harvey and a bucket of paint thinner would have that thing bare in a jiff.

It would be incredibly stupid to do that. The Rock is a student message board for every topic you can imagine and the VAST MAJORITY (by vast I mean over 95+ percent) is on every other topic imaginable).

ETA: First apologies for calling you stupid. Obviously I AM stupid one here. I misread your post completely and my only defense is that sometimes I go full retard and I've had a migraine all day and both migraines and the meds I have to take sometimes get the better of me.

I bumped it because I saw where it actually shed THREE TONS of paint. I say a bit more about it all a coupla posts up but since I didn't want to start a whole new thread thought bumping was the best way.

Also, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see an mri of it. I've been informed that the the latex paint (was likely the main culprit in it is prone to sloughing off like that but the early layers are gonna be everything from latex to oil to enamel and lead based paints were probably used since it was all done by students and that poses problems for excavation of each layer so to speak.

I would love to get ahold of some the late 60s-early 70s layers as UT was one of the only universities to be a part of the peace movement and protest Vietnam. When Nixon thought he was being clever by visiting us after Kent State (we were his first public appearance) there were protests everywhere. He thought since Billy Graham had rented out a room and running one of his revivals in one of our buildings he sorely mistook who we were. ANY other southern school and he'd have been home free but not here.

Even if we can't start chipping layers off now, preserve it until we can get better means of imaging. It's a damn time capsule.
