I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess this is wildly due to Memphis...
But man I still love that place

I bet Memphis wasn't #1 before Katrina hit New Orleans.
I watched a show "My Hood" hosted by Ice-T.
They followed C-Murder around the 3rd ward. 10 people died during the filming.
They only followed him for a day or two...

Actually the murder rate has gone down in New Orleans since Katrina. And 99% of them occur in the inner city crack house areas anyway.
If we could get rid of drugs and unemployment in the inner cities, America would be better off.
What's also noteworthy is that the economies of New Orleans and Louisiana have improved relative to the rest of the nation since the recession, with several publications listing New Orleans as not just 'Hollywood South', but High Tech, Digital, and Entrepreneur South.
And the growth and diversity will continue with the new billion dollar LSU Medical Complex being built downtown and all the new technology companies and start-ups coming to N.O.

I've seen Memphis and Nashville both listed in these infamous top 10s. This publication had Memphis as the 5th and Nashville as the 18th most dangerous.

Memphis has the disenfranchised who only need a small bit of government help to make it over the top.
Now on the other side of the state there are the inbred hillbillies who cut and shoot each other after getting a belly full of shine, mad with daddy about sister. There's your real crime problem.

That's not a surprise now, but it surprised me several years ago. Oldest kid was a nurse at a Memphis hospital, and her and her husband continuously griped about Memphis and how it was worse than Jackson, MS. No way, sez me. But then every time we talked she'd talk about today's gunshot victim that came in... oh. Well I guess you win, then.

That's because most of the riff raff stayed in the cities that they evacuated to.

That's what I was saying. Before the Hurricane, from what I saw, some parts of N.O. looked like war zones. It looked down right scary. That show about the projects in the 3rd ward was unreal. I couldn't believe things could be THAT bad in an American city. Again, this was pre-Katrina. I know things are better there now.

Lived with some 3rd year med students during my internship in Memphis. Our building was surrounded by barbwire and had only one way in. Someone still got shot on our sidewalk lol

Pre-Katrina NO was not a place for the faint-hearted to say the least.
C-Murder's only hit is still dope. He was waaaaay better than Silkk the Shocker's offbeat arse.
