Well, that's two posters responding to a question that had nothing to do with where UT football has been lately. Including the poster that promted the question to begin with.

This thread is about hype and folks assuming we're hyping ourselves - it's not unreasonable to conclude that from your post, especially since we keep hearing in every UT thread that is remotely positive that we've been saying 'this is the year!' for decades.

tDecline started in the 08 season so that's only 7 years but really 6 given the progress last year which showed many of us that the terrible death spin was over (not a great record but under all the circumstances close to a miracle that we even got bowl eligible - most analysts/pundits picked us to go 4-8 (5-7 at best). And with having to replace the entire OL AND DL headed into that season plus having to play a metric ton of true freshman that wasn't unreasonable.

At any rate, you have my apologies for misreading you.

But I do have to ask and I do so without sarcasm: What was your meaning?

ETA: Forgive my typos. One of them days.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tennesee won the East this year. And I wouldn't be surprised if they were mediocre again.

There are certainly questions on that defense at at least one position on all levels. Only homers would say otherwise.

That's pretty fair and an opinion I kinda agree with, especially if you define mediciocre as 8 games (barring injuries at key spots). In some ways we've got the talent but unfortunately not everywhere (just most places minus OL) and we're not too deep at critical positions.

8 wins is mediocre to me.Especially when the division is down like it has been for some time. With all the good recruits you're getting I would lean towards you finally breaking through this year.

Here is where the hype comes from.

Going 4-1 down the stretch with the new QB.

Not really. But feel free to name those spots you feel are question marks. Most would say the secondary but it just ain't true - E. Mosely has experience under his belt at corner and is gonna be good. Another corner (incoming) is the highly touted JUCO Justin Martin who spent one year in JUCO and has 3 more years to play:

Ht:6'3"
Wt:185 lbs (think he's gained a few pounds since)
Runs a 4.41 40
247Sports Composite
0.9069, Natl Comp 11, Pos CB 2, St TN 1
247Sports 94
7 1 1

If he's half as good as advertised, we'd doing good.

At safety, we have an embarrassment of riches. JRM at OLB is a BEAST. And when we need another OLB (which is often) DE Curt Maggitt (had more sacks than Barnett and is a monster takes that role).

So PLEASE tell us where the questions are other than at MLB.

What, if anything, have the Vols done on the field to garner this hype I've seen lately? How many teams that have finished in the AP top 25 has Butch defeated at UT?

This sounds like something you should ask the media. You know, the ones that are actually doing the hyping.

McNeil and MLB are huge question marks as is the DT depth. McNeil is a Dooley level player. Tennessee desperately needs TK to step up there.

Williams and Obrien are average to maybe slightly above and there is no proven depth behind them though I do think McKenzie will be our best DT from day one. Counting on Saulsberry or Picou would be very bad.

Orange squad beat the White Squad instead of a scoreless tie this year.

I thought Saulsberry's career was over? McKenzie and Tutler should be an immediate upgrade over Jordan Williams on day one anyways.

The hype isn't that TN will be a national title contender just that they could be in the top 3 of the East and possibly win it, not sure why that is so shocking.

Yall winning the east would be pretty shocking

I believe more in the Tennessee hype then the Arkansas hype. The Tennessee Program is a year away from playing in the SEC Championship Game and they have the players this year to come very close. I don't know what the hell Arkansas has going for them.
