What, if anything, have the Vols done on the field to garner this hype I've seen lately? How many teams that have finished in the AP top 25 has Butch defeated at UT?

Bama was 7-6 in 2007 and Bama fans had pretty high expectations for 2008 and beyond. We shall see.

Here is where the hype comes from.

2 Top Five recruiting classes back to back the last two cycles.

Returning 18 or 19 starters depending on how you count.

Returning a QB that many feel has the potential to be a great one.

Having a coaching staff in place going into it's third year coming off two rebuilding years that saw the record improve by two games in year two.

Going 4-1 down the stretch with the new QB.

Pounding Iowa in the bowl game.

And to answer your second question 1.

You went 4-1 down the stretch because down the stretch consisted of Vandy, Kentucky and South Carolina.

So you beat Vandy and suddenly you are back?

And that Iowa team was terrible. Did you see their schedule? If they had been a decent team they would have been undefeated. They played 1 ranked team all year long, and lost.

At any rate, the best win Tennessee had last year was against 7-6 South Carolina.

Arkansas had much better wins, and was actually the real improved team towards the end of the year.

But it's all good, because hype trains crash in spectacular fashion.

Your inferiority complex is massive. I miss the good ol' days of UT fans actually having a leg to stand on

I'm just answering the question, no need to get your panties in a wad.

There is hype whether you want to cry about it or not and those are the main reasons for it.

It seems pretty logical to me.

TN looked great down the stretch with Dobbs, should only be MUCH better with more talent and experience in 2015.

They were only 1 point worse than UF, 3 pts worse than UGA (both without Dobbs when our OL was an even bigger hinderance to the O) and 7 points worse than Missouri last year and 2 of those have major QB issues this year and Missouri has a big DL problem.

The hype isn't that TN will be a national title contender just that they could be in the top 3 of the East and possibly win it, not sure why that is so shocking.

Tennessee beat up on weak teams down the stretch.

There are still questions at all levels on their defense and on the offensive line, especially at tackle.

If those questions are answered, UT could be quite good.

But the last 5 games don't say much when you beat:

5-7 UK
7-6 USCe (barely)
3-9 Vandy (barely)
7-6 Iowa

The hype crash will happen the same game as the last 10 years.

If Butch can not win with the talent he has recruited he should be fired after the 2016 season.

Flat out Wrong. The only question is at Middle Linebacker and replacing AJ Johnson on a defense that returns almost everyone and adds some very talented depth.

OT is the big question going into this season. And still a position that we feel stronger about than last year. UF's OL situation is much worse and it's not close.

Why do people keep bringing up 2008 Alabama as a comparison? Not only was that year two for Nick Saban at Alabama, we were not getting much preseason hype. We were maybe 24th in one pre-season poll and most expected Clemson to kill us in Atlanta. Regardless, Saban already had two SEC titles and a national title on his resume. That's where the confidence resided for Alabama fans.
