Tennessee fans bagging on Chavis

Is hilarious.
Was Tennessee's defense really so terrible under him? I'm surprised at the number of Vol fans unconcerned with LSU's total defense/scoring defense-ranked 9th/5th nationally.
Even the infamous Third and Chavis has developed a new meaning on da bayou.
I guess I'm just surprised at the venom directed at the man that sculpted your defenses for so long. Some very good ones. Though, the one he has this year may be his best yet. Time will tell.

He was just part of the Fulmer regime. Fulmer got old quickly and Chavis was a by-product.
What's crazy is since that, LK, daddy and Be Be fricked them and headed west.

2008: 3
2007: 70
2006: 50
2005: 7
2004: 45
2003: 22
If he fluctuated that much at LSU the LSU fans would hate him as well

Interesting note
LSU 3rd down conversion % defense - 18th in country
TN 3rd down conversion % defense - 46th in country

TN 3rd down conversion % defense - 46th in country

Chavis looks like he has changed his scheme to be more aggressive than when he was at TN imo. I may be wrong but this isnt the same defense he had at TN, and they were every bit as talented as this LSu defense.

Same defensive scheme pretty much, we just have better athletes all around to run it than what he had at TN to close out his career there. He runs a lot less deep zone here than at TN because he trusts our DBs in man-to-man more. TN fans hated the Mustang package but LSU fans love it.

I don't think many Vol fans would have agreed with that
If anything I've heard them be critical of talent erosion at UT and blame Chavis for not recruiting effectively near the end there

Chavis loving La talent and LSU overall recruiting class talent. Something Tenn doesn't have nearly as good in-state, something Tenn slid hard on the national front with Richt, Saban, Tubby's, and Meyer's ascents in the 2000s..as Fulmer aged fast in the post-Peyton/Tee Martin title team.
Dooley has his work cut out for him in chasing down Fla in East, or beating Bama on the regular.

I was really proud to see the 4th qtr vs West Virginia. 7 on the line / pressure coming

I can tell you so far this season, its 5 times as aggressive as last season.
I kept waiting for Chavis to call off the dogs against WVU and just defend the big play and he didn't. A very pleasant and unexpected surprise that I really hope continues if we find ourselves in similar situations against Florida, Auburn, Bama, and Arkansas.

not quite
He wasn't near as blitz happy, and take a closer look at where the DB's line up on 3rd and long this year.
It's no longer zone

P.S. LSU and Tenn can empathize with another..they are the two schools that must play Bama and Fla every year.

Another thing I noticed as well.
Blitzing and playing man-man on 3rd and long. We didn't even see this very often with Pelini.

Chavis is no Hat..he's sophisticated..give him the players to press..he will..and is taking advantage of the ballers and depth at hand.

Has a lot to do with the talent of your defense, and what the personnel is capable of.

Yeah, this is a great excuse. 15 NFL players on the 2 deep of the 2001 defense, including John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth as your anchors in the middle. No way the athletes were there to stop a Matt Mauck QB draw.

Having an offensive coordinator that still cannot grasp such a simple concept after 3 years brings about more anger and frustration than I ever thought I could feel.

Simple math - He has PP7 and Tyrann in the nickle / long yardage. Front 4 great with a rush from the edge. Why not be agressive with this group.
One player that probably improved the most since the first game is Mo Claiborne, playin in their face !!

I just don't understand how the 2007 defense was so bad. Eric Berry, Jerod Mayo, Robert Ayers, all first round picks. With tons of seniors and talented young players mixed in. That defense giving up 59 is what did it for me with the Chief of Mediocrity.

Yeah the talent equality from my perspective was from earlier in his carrer at Tn. But they were never this aggressive. It will be fun to see if he keeps it up if LSu gets blasted on a blitz or something when they face a better offense although WV was the best offense yall have faced this yr. Fla may have the abilty to burn him on a blitz, but not many others do on your sched.
