As an outsider, I've wondered what type of fanbase Vanderbilt is in the SEC, and what kind of role they have. They had some good years under James Franklin but they are often the forgotten member of the SEC in the eyes of fans from other conferences.

Are they a good fit in the conference? Do they particularly care about athletics the way other SEC fanbases do? Culturally, do y'all think they would be a better fit in the ACC? What "role" does Vandy play in SEC athletics/politics?

They have experienced success in basketball and baseball, including a recent national championship and as many College World Series appearances as Auburn in baseball & twice as many NCAA Tournament appearances as Auburn in basketball.

They are a valuable member of the conference, far more so than teams like Ole Miss & Mississippi State.

They have often been competitive in sports other than football.

Football, though, hasn't been consistently good for 70 or so years.

Charter member. Has no real power though as no one cares about their opnion. HS stadium in a conf full of coliseums.

it's the only private school in the sec.

A UT coach creates a auto hot seat by losing to vandy or ky.

Why do you ask??

You'd have to ask them but I can't imagine having a league without Vanderbilt in it. The smart school jokes, Memorial Gym, trips to Nashville, show your gold, etc.

They are what they are in football, but they are very good in basketball and baseball and a key member of the league in those sports. And they have a football identity of playing smart, tough, shorthanded football for most of the last 30 years.

They are very much a SEC school and always will be.

Are you serious with that culture question? Because from this side, it sounds like a goddamn insult to both Vandy (nerdz don't sport) and 'teh dumbz SEC.'

They also have many more baseball titles than Alabama and a better basketball program overall for the last 12-15 years

Make of it what you will, but Vanderbilt has potential to be at minimum like Duke in football. They need a guy like Cutcliffe, not a Derek Mason.

eta - you could argue Duke's success is because they play in a conference that's watered down.

Their AD should focus on baseball and basketball success as well as olympic sports. Dedicate themselves to basketball because their hs football field and resources will always put them at a disadvantage in football. They could help their case by hiring an offensive minded coach though.

Over the last 6-7 years their overall record is probably pretty close to Duke's. 37-38 since 2011 with 4 bowl games and 2 Top 25 finishes.

How much of that success was under James Franklin vs. Derek Mason? That is my point. They need an offensive minded coach who can employ a system that overcomes the talent disparity. They can't try to play like Stanford in the SEC against faster, bigger, and stronger teams.

Mason went from 0-8 to 2-6 to 3-5 in the SEC and went 6-6 last year.

We'll see if that was a fluke or not this year.

Most of their fans are smart enough to avoid this cesspool of a website.
Yes, they care about athletics.
They have an annoying fan who whistles at baseball games.
That's probably all you need to know.

Vandy needs an offense. They've either won with defense or have stayed in games because of it. Their defense likes to hit hard, someone forgot to tell them they are a lower tier team on defense. They may not have offensive firepower on offense yet but your receivers, RB's etc will know they played a defense that brings pain.

Doctor William Dudley, a chemistry professor at Vanderbilt, created the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) in 1894, one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the US. Members of the SIAA would later go on to form the Southern Conference, and from there both the SEC and the ACC.

So you could say a Vanderbilt chemistry professor was essentially the Founding Father to collegiate football at the highest levels in the Southeast USA....

No. Vanderbilt belongs in the SEC and I can't imagine the conference without them. They been here since day 1, coming from the old Southern Conference. ACC has Duke, the BIG 10 has Northwestern, PAC has Stanford and we have our Vanderbilt.

fans need to understand, its not all about football. It is not only a football conference. it is the southeastern conference. meaning schools in the southeast contribute differently. I find this topic hard to explain to bama fans because they are GOOD at football. Well guess what, Vanderbilt is GOOD at baseball, Vanderbilt is GOOD at academics, etc. please do not count out Vanderbilt because of our football record. if it was only a football conference, maybe I see your point, but with it simply being a conference, they certainly deserve to be there.
