Not as good as he was in his prime at football, though I'll grant you he's better at basketball at this stage of his career.
And I really like Nessler, but I think I'd still rather have Verne on SEC football, even now. I wish Nessler would have stayed in that ESPN primetime spot with Blackledge instead leaving us with the insufferable Tessitore.

Starting a sweet 16 game at or just after 10 IF the other games finish on time is just plain bad and stupid, especially for teams who are on the east coast. Let the west coast teams play that late. It is really irritating. Oregon and Gonzaga play in the 7pm hour, which is 4pm on the west coast.
STUPID

First sweet 16 in my lifetime and Uncle Verne will be calling it.

OT but yaaassss one of my favorite announcers is doing Michigan vs Oregon, one of my games I'll focus on.
Yes, I'll probably watch Kentucky vs UCLA and South Carolina vs Baylor, but those are on Friday.

They were talking about that on local radio earlier today. Basically complaining about start times in general. Someone suggested 6:15, 7:30, 8:45, and 10:00 would be better. If you're going to have one tip off that late, at least start them earlier so you don't have two games starting 20 or 30 minutes apart.

Assuming all these are EST?

Sure am glad I'm not stuck in Eastern Time Zone. The Harlan/Miller/Bonner team has been the best by far in my view.

Verne caught a lot of shrapnel from being paired with Danielson, IMO.

I was reading a book written about the UK/Duke 1992 Eastern Regional Final (aka the Laettner shot game) and Verne was the PBP guy for that game. He was just a B-List announcer back then and in the book he said that game got so much viewership and notoriety that it launched him into primetime. Believe it or not but after he proclaimed the shot good he just let the scene roll and went silent.

Damn, didn't know Verne called the Laettner shot. Combine that with Nicklaus' putt at Augusta in 1986, and I would say he's pretty lucky.
