Sumlin's Folly: His Arrogance Is His Undoing

Sumlin losing to LSU the past 3 years has gotten into his head just like 2008 got into Miles' head. He is reaching back to try and go forward and it isn't going to work.
Chavis will not have the success at A&M that he had at LSU - and even the success at LSU is tempered by constant late game collapses.
Sumlin doesn't know what it takes to win in the SEC and he is grasping at straws at this point. So, poaching Chavis seemed like a good move for him. Chavis is a good DC and will make A&M better by stabilizing them on defense. Some say that that is all that Sumlin needs because of his offense. But, why Chavis?
Why did Sumlin go and hire a 58 year old DC who gave up 34 and 41 and 31 points this year, who gave up 44 points to Georgia last year, and who consistently cannot stop teams at the end of halves and games? Chavis is good. But, is he $1.7 million good? Is he the best?
No. I wish we could have kept him and A&M got a good one (I do not deny that), but he is not worth $1.7 million. He just isn't.
Sumlin is arrogant. He went after Chavis because Chavis stopped Sumlin. Sumlin thinks that if Chavis could stop him then he is the best because Sumlin believes that HE is the best. But, the rest of Chavis' work doesn't back that theory up.
Chavis is good, but I am surprised that Sumlin could not get a great defensive mind for all of that money. Instead, his arrogance got the better of him and he opened the bank for the the guy who could stop HIM. The problem is that A&M doesn't have the players to stop anyone else - and won't for at least 2 years. By then, Chavis will be 60 and you have to wonder if SEC offenses will not have him completely figured out - like many do now.
Chavis is good, but not the best - not $1.7 million good. It just seems that Sumlin should have done better. Why Chavis for all of that money?

Chavis is a great hire for the Ags. They will get a solid d and they don't even need an elite d to win big bc of their offense. I think LSU and TAMU both improve from his move.

I didn't read any of this shite...but hell yeah I agree with all of it.

Put down the purple glasses immediately.

Chavis consistently puts a top 20 defense on the field. A&M only needs a decent defense to win. Chavis has consistently won while having a craptastic offense on the other side. Not to mention the recruiting swing this could create, or the amount of talent he consistently has put in the NFL. You LSU fans sure are bitter.

I AGREE with all of this. I really do. I said as much yesterday in a post. It is a good hire for the Aggies and they will get better.
But, for $1.7 million, the highest ever paid to a DC, why go get Chavis? Is he worth that? Could A&M have gotten the same results from any other competent DC out there? For far less money?
I suspect that Sumlin became enamored with Chavis because Chavis consistently stopped Sumlin not because he is actually the best DC in college football.

This melt is the best I've seen yet. There really is no reason to read your diatribe.

Sure. Literally any opinion that another SEC fan has on anything that disagrees with anyone else is constantly characterized as "butthurt" here. I get it.
I honestly do not care that Chavis is gone. LSU will find a good DC and life will go on. He is very good, but his presence is not the end all be all of college football.
I just started thinking about why Sumlin, of all people, wanted Chavis badly enough to throw $1.7 million at him.

Then by all means, don't read it.
And, it isn't a melt. It's a theory.
Sumlin is enamored with Chavis because Chavis is the only one who could consistently stop HIM. But, stopping Sumlin does not necessarily mean that Chavis is the best DC out there - except that Sumlin believes he is because Sumlin believes that he is the best offensive mind out there. That is arrogance and is detrimental.
But, yes, Chavis will make A&M's defense better. No doubt about that.
