Gimmicky high school coaches like the spread because it can mask their lack of actual coaching ability.

I can't blame them them, it's a smart thing to do. Some have even parlayed this fraud into huge million dollar contracts at middle of the pack programs in big conferences.

I swear to God I would not be surprised if in 5 years Jeff Traylor is HC.

The word about Charlie in 08 when AU was looking for a coach was he was terrible with interviews. He claimed his white wife was holding him back. I just haven't seen enough on him that indicates he's a great coach.

LSU certainly can't afford to be paying these recruits, so it must be.

I actually think it creates more of an issue for the mentality of defensive players. Less emphasis on physicality. Maybe some offensive positions as well.

I don't think the fundamentals are as much of an issue for HS spread prospects. It's not like traditional offenses are that complex at the HS level.

Yes, I think it's an issue and kids are attracted to playing for Sumlin's Air Raid as it's what they are familiar with. I see kids explicitly say that very thing in recruiting interviews all the time

the kids LSU recruits explicitly say they want to play in the NFL one day. you may call the pro set a boring offense (even tho I completely disagree with you) but the pros like it and most definitely recruit players that played in this type of offense over the fun and high flying system players. fact

Pro set is fine but not what talent is predicated on. Dick Bumpas is taking talent at TCU and turning TE's into DE's. QB's into DB's. It's phenomenal. The UT recipe cannot withstand the SEC raping.

This is an issue actually, the number of Tx players drafted at the lb and dl position is on a steady decline, but now more than ever WR's from Texas are dominating, Rashard Higgins lead the nation in yards last year, and then you have college studs at Baylor, TCU and A&M, then you have Dez, Terrance Williams, Mike Evans, Titans guy, Cole beasley. 7v7 is killing Texas football, its hard to get any d-lineman or linebacker from the state of texas these days because they aren't any.

The school that I just retired from in Texas ran a spread offense, but the running backs got the ball over 60-65% of the plays.

A&M has put offensive players in to the NFL, and a lot of high profile ones, no less. You don't pay attention. Your boring arse offense isn't a path to the NFL more than any other offense, and given the lack of production it mostly likely limits some players draft grade since they can't even get the ball to show off to scouts.

Most of y'all aren't seeing the forest for the trees on this comment by Strong.

The issue isn't whether or not that's accurate, it's how AMAZINGLY DUMB it is for him to get on the air and be openly critical of it. His JOB is to recruit Texas HS players. HS coaches are a big part of the recruiting process. If they don't like you (Franchione), you're in for a world of hurt. Stong here is calling them and their players out. He already didn't have a good reputation with them after essentially blowing off the TX HS Coach's Covention when he was first hired and giving them a rambling, incoherent "speech". Then he added fuel to the fire by recruiting a bunch of FL HS players that FSU, Miami and UF didn't want. Now he's saying they and their players suck live on the radio.

The guy's a PR nightmare.

This is exactly why he was passed over by so many schools who interviewed him. ADs got to hear him answer questions and speak in an interview setting and thought "thanks, but I'll pass."

Because his offensive coordinator sucks. I mean, the guy got fired from two jobs at peer institutions before.
